Associate Professor at the Unit of Medical Microbiology, Instituto Higiene e Medicina Tropical, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (IHMT-NOVA). PhD in Biology - Molecular Biology, by FCT-NOVA (1997). Leader of the research group Tuberculosis, HIV and Opportunistic Pathogens of the R&D Center Global Health and Tropical Medicine (GHTM). Coordinator of 6 R&D funded projects, team member in over 25 R&D projects w/ national and international research teams. Co-author of 116 papers in international journals with peer-review and 10 book chapters. Main research interests: antibiotic and biocide resistance mechanisms in staphylococci; efflux driven antimicrobial resistance in bacteria; molecular detection of pathogenic bacteria, including drug resistant staphylococci and mycobacteria. Scientific supervision of 4 post-docs, 5 PhD students (+3 as co-supervisor) and 20 Msc students (+11 as co-supervisor). Coordination of seven Curricular Units at PhD and Master Programs at IHMT-NOVA. Member of the Scientific Councils of the MSc course in Biomedical Sciences (IHMT-NOVA) and MSc course in Medical Microbiology (NOVA). Member of the General Council of IHMT-UNL. Vice-President of the Scientific Council of IHMT-NOVA.
