Fernando Ricardo, born in 1984, graduated in Marine Biology and Biotechnology (School of Tourism and Maritime Technology, IPLeiria) and MSc in Marine Biology (University of Aveiro). In 2017 obtained his PhD in Marine Biology from the University of Aveiro, within the first scientific project developed in Portugal specifically addressing the need to develop innovative tools to trace the geographic origin of seafood project RASTREMAR, Seafood barcodes - Using molecular tools for traceability (funded by the EU Fisheries Fund through PROMAR). The PhD work was mostly focused on the traceability of geographic origin of bivalves (namely Cerastoderma edule) which, clearly demonstrated the potential that elemental and lipidomic tools hold to confirm the place of origin of traded seafood, either to confirm traders claims or to expose fraudulent practices associated with the mislabeling of place of origin. From 2017 to 2019 he was a post-doc researcher from SmartBioR Project (Enhancement of Endogenous Marine Biological Resources), an innovative program in the context of blue biotechnology through the valorization of the lipidome of halophytes and macroalgae for the identification of bioactive substances of interest and to add value to bivalves through the development of traceability tools. From March of 2019 to December of 2021 he is researcher in the research unit CESAM (Centro de Estudos do Ambiente e do Mar, University of Aveiro) and integrates the scientific committee of TraSeafood Project - Tracing the Geographic Origin of Seafood as a Pathway Towards the Smart Valorization of Endogenous Marine Resources. His current research interests include traceability tools, mass spectrometry, marine lipidomics and biostatistics.
