Célia Gonçalves holds a degree in Cultural Heritage (2006), a Master's (2009) and a PhD (2014) in Archaeology from the University of Algarve. She is currently Principal Investigator at ICArEHB — the Interdisciplinary Center for Archaeology and the Evolution of Human Behaviour — where she coordinates the research line Adaptations to Coastal Environments, serves on the centre’s executive board, and leads the Digital Archaeology Laboratory. Her research focuses on the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to prehistoric archaeology, particularly in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction and the analysis of settlement and mobility patterns during the Mesolithic. She has led and collaborated on numerous research projects funded by national and international bodies, including the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the EarthWatch Institute, securing a total funding volume exceeding €825,000. She currently leads the citizen science project At the Turning of the Tide (EarthWatch Institute, USA) and oversees the scientific development of the future Interpretation Centre of the Muge Shellmiddens. She is also actively involved in interdisciplinary projects addressing socio-environmental transitions and adaptive strategies during the Holocene and Late Pleistocene, such as DuneScape, EDIM, FINISTERRA, and DISPERSALS. Her academic output includes 21 peer-reviewed articles in international journals, 8 book chapters, 35 other scientific publications, and the co-edition of 4 conference proceedings. She has delivered over 69 communications at national and international conferences. In the field of higher education, she teaches at the University of Algarve and the University of Coimbra, currently directing the postgraduate course in Field Digital Archaeology, and supervises Master's and PhD students. She is also engaged in public outreach and citizen science initiatives, such as the development of the MugePortal app, which provides virtual reconstructions of the Mesolithic complex of Muge, contributing to the public dissemination and valorisation of archaeological heritage.
