Dr. Hugo Entradas Silva holds a PhD in Civil Engineering – Building Physics from the NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon (FCT-NOVA, Portugal) (2014–2019). The search for a compromise between energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and the conservation of buildings drives his research. His main areas of expertise include the hygrothermal behaviour of buildings, thermal comfort, preventive conservation of buildings, and indoor climate monitoring. He is currently an Assistant Researcher at the Department of Civil Engineering at FCT-NOVA and a researcher affiliated with the research centre CERIS – Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability, rated as "Excellent" by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT-MCTES). Dr. Hugo Entradas Silva has authored or co-authored 21 scientific publications, including 12 papers in journals indexed in SCOPUS and Web of Science. His research on cultural heritage buildings is particularly noteworthy, with case studies including the National Museum of Ancient Art of Lisbon and the Monastery of Jerónimos, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He has also worked on residential buildings, focusing on energy poverty, energy efficiency, and thermal comfort. With a strong focus on hygrothermal performance, he has proposed new methods for optimisation and risk assessment, including a method for optimising indoor climate in heritage buildings in Southern Europe and a semi-adaptive thermal comfort model derived from the PMV model, considering the ability of museum visitors to adjust clothing. Dr. Hugo Entradas Silva is currently a member of a national technical committee for the revision of a standard related to windows and is coordinating a study on energy poverty and thermal comfort, funded by the Energy Poverty Advisory Hub (EPAH—European Union). The project includes indoor climate monitoring of nine buildings in central Portugal. Since December 2021, he has been involved in national funding programmes under the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) – C13 Energy Efficiency through FCT-NOVA. He worked as a Guest Lecturer in 2013/2014 at the Department of Civil Engineering of FCT-NOVA, teaching undergraduate and master’s courses, including Building Materials I and II, Building Services, and Construction Design. Between 2014 and 2018, he also contributed to the teaching of Building Physics and Functional Optimisation of Buildings, particularly in topics such as driving rain, thermal comfort, indoor air quality, and numerical modelling of heat transfer in construction elements. He also collaborated with the World Monuments Fund in the final stage of his PhD research. International mobility played a key role in shaping his perspective through an IAESTE scholarship in Brazil and a Leonardo da Vinci scholarship in Italy. In Brazil, he focused on sustainable construction; in Italy, he gained hands-on experience in building inspection and diagnostics, with relevant case studies such as the Fontego dei Tedeschi Palace and Palazzo della Ragione in Venice. His academic journey in building physics began in 2011, during his master’s degree in civil engineering, with a microclimatic study of a church in Lisbon. He completed his MSc dissertation with final grade of 19 (0-20) and graduated with the highest average grade in the Integrated master’s in civil engineering—Construction Profile in the academic year 2011/2012. In addition to his academic and teaching roles, Dr. Hugo Entradas Silva has also developed private sector experience and applied scientific knowledge to engineering consultancy. From January 2019 to November 2021, he worked as a design engineer in a technical consultancy office. In April 2022, he founded a new brand, designed as HES Engenharia to offer civil engineering and consulting services grounded in academic research. He later became a founding partner of HFES Engenharia, aiming to apply his expertise to benefit society.
