ANA GANHO ÁVILA COSTA

Ana Ganho Ávila (female) is currently a doctorate researcher at CINEICC, a certified psychotherapist by the Portuguese Society of Constructivist Psychotherapy and certified psychologist with expertise in Clinical and Health Psychology and Psychotherapy by the Portuguese College of Psychology. Between 2002 and 2007, Ana has worked for the Ministry of Health as a psychologist and counselor for HIV/AIDS, setting up the national network of HIV counseling services and as Junior Project Manager/Consultant for the Regional Funding Program for HIV Prevention. Between 2007 and 2011, Ana was the Director of the Shelter for Women and Children at the Charity Cáritas Diocesana de Coimbra. In 2011 she was awarded with a Ph.D. scholarship in Basic Psychology to conduct her studies on the neuropsychophysiological correlates of anxiety at the Neuropsychophygiology Lab of the School of Psychology of the University of Minho, advised by Professor Óscar Filipe Gonçalves. Back to Coimbra in 2013, she continued her Ph.D. studies co-advised by Professor Jorge Almeida at the Proaction Lab (Center for Research in Neuropsychology and Cognitive Behavioral Intervention [CINEICC] at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra (FPCE-UC). At the Proaction Lab, Ana started conducted her postdoctoral work between 2016-2019, as the PI of the I&D project PTDC/MHC-PAP/5618/2014 and studying the neuronal correlates of mood and anxiety and the clinical applicability of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS). In 2018, Ana Ganho Ávila's team was awarded with new fundings for research in translational neuroscience using NIBS and Virtual Reality by BIAL Foundation. Additionally, in 2018, her research focus shifted to the applicability of NIBS in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, and she coordinated the international consortia for funding to European calls including one two-stage proposal to Horizon 2020 (SEP-210653171; Score: 12.5/15) and a COST Action (CA18138- Riseup-PPD - Research Innovation and Sustainable Pan-European Network in Peripartum Depression Disorder [PPD]) retained for funding [2019-2023] and of which she was the Chair and Grant Holder Scientific Representative. In 2019, she was awarded the Young Researcher Support (3rd Edition 2019 Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus) to conduct her studies focusing home-based tDCS in PPD (2020.02059.CEECIND; starting date: Oct 2021) and since 2020, Ana is a contracted doctoral researcher in CINEICC. Ana is certified in Clinical Trials by Harvard Medical School, certified in Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation by the City College of New York and certified in clinical applications of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. Since 2018, Ana is a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Annual Conference in Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation in Psychiatry. Currently, Ana is the Secretary of the Committee of the European Society for Brain Stimulation (ESBS) and the Vice-president of the Neuromodulation Section of the Portuguese Society of Psychiatry and Mental Health. Acknowledged as an expert in the field of applied NIBS, Ana has been invited to co-author international consensus papers (e.g. Baeken et al., 2019; LOTES 2023 [updating LOTES 2017] and chapters (e.g. Ganho-Ávila et al., 2022), and has published her work as first and co-author in several international peer-reviewed journals. In academia, in the past years, she taught several courses of the Master Program at FPCE-UC, related to basic, social, affective and clinical neuroscience, motivation and emotion, was invited lecturer abroad (e.g. Mackenzie Presbyterian University, São Paulo, Brazil), offers practice training in NIBS to clinicians and supervises masters and PhD thesis in clinical applications of NIBS and the neuro-correlates of parenthood.
