Filipa completed her Master in Biological Engineering at the University of Minho (UMinho) in 2008. In 2013, she completed her PhD thesis in Bioengineering at UMinho under the MIT-Portugal program. The main purpose of her PhD thesis was to apply scaled-down reactors for the process intensification of hydroxyapatite precipitation. The thesis was done with the collaboration of the Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy (LEPABE) of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and the Jensen Research Group from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After a Post-Doctoral position at the Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB) (UMinho), Filipa joined the Supramolecular Assemblies group of LEPABE (FEUP) under a FCT Post-Doctoral fellowship. From September 2018 to June 2023, she was a Junior Researcher at FEUP as part of ALiCE - Associate Laboratory in Chemical Engineering/LEPABE and the research line of Supramolecular Assemblies. From July 2023 to October 2024, Filipa was an Assistant Researcher at CEB (UMinho) under the 5th edition of the Stimulus Competition for Individual Scientific Employment (CEEC Individual). Currently, she is an Assistant Researcher at LABBELS (Associate Laboratory in Biotechnology and Bioengineering and Microelectromechanical Systems)/CEB. She is part of the Biomass, Bioreactors and Bioproducts for industrial applications research line. Her research focuses on the development of a unique platform for the crystallization of biomolecules by combining (1) nucleation control strategies and (2) oscillatory flow crystallizers together with (3) process analytical technology (PAT) and (4) process modeling. Filipa is the Principal Researcher of the project 2023.11352.PEX - An innovative strategy towards the sustainable separation of whey proteins, which aims to develop a cost-effective and scalable platform for the selective crystallization of whey proteins. Filipa is also part of the coordination of the MSCA-DN PROCRYSTAL-101169471, "Crystallisation towards efficient and sustainable biomanufacturing". PROCRYSTAL will train 15 doctoral students with special attention to fundamental understanding of the underlying phenomena of biomolecules crystallisation, from the molecular scale to process scale, and advanced experimental and modelling techniques specific to crystallisation technology. She is one the of the authors of the granted patent "Modular Oscillatory Flow Plate Reactor" EP3439773 (B1). She has also been engaged with Science Communication and Outreach and participated at the UPorto EMERGENCE Hackathon (2021). She has published 3 book chapters and 25 scientific papers in international peer review journals with an h-index of 14 in Chemical Engineering, Crystallization and Materials fields. Filipa is a reviewer of several international journals including Industrial & engineering chemistry research. She is currently supervising a Master student. She supervised 2 PhD and 6 MSc theses. Filipa got different distinctions: FEUP scientific recognition award (2023); best student award (Prémio Universidade do Minho 2008); PhD fellowship FCT (SFRH / BD / 42992 / 2008) and Post-Doc fellowship (SFRH/BPD/96132/2013).
