Horváth Kata is a young scholar in media and communication studies. Her academic and professional focus is on understanding the complexities of journalism, disinformation, and media systems in contemporary Europe. She is currently a doctoral candidate at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Portugal, pursuing a PhD in Communication Sciences. Her academic journey began at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary, where she completed both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Media and Communication with honours. She has contributed to several book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, often collaborating with leading Hungarian media scholars. Notably, she co-authored the chapter “Disinformation under the guise of democracy: lessons from Hungary” in the Routledge volume State-Sponsored Disinformation Around the Globe (2024) and authored “ÁLHÍREK LELEPLEZÉSE: Tényellenorzés a világban és Magyarországon” (“Fact-checking in the world and in Hungary”), which appeared in a Hungarian anthology on the phenomenon of disinformation. Her work frequently explores the role of state-sponsored narratives, the resilience of independent journalism, and the challenges faced by young journalists in polarized media environments. In addition to her publications, Horváth has been an active participant in international academic discourse. She has presented her research at major conferences and symposia across Europe, including the Lisbon Winter School for the Study of Communication, the EDMO Scientific Conference on Disinformation at the University of Amsterdam, and the Central and Eastern European Communication and Media Conference at Masaryk University. Her presentations have addressed topics such as the impact of disinformation in Hungary, the resilience of journalists under non-democratic regimes, and the role of political influencers in spreading hostile narratives during electoral campaigns.
