Ana Alexandra Pereira is an Assistant Researcher at LEPABE. She completed her PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering at University of Porto in 2008 regarding the development of non-intrusive biofouling monitoring methodologies. The most relevant practical result from the PhD was the MSS (Mechatronic Surface Sensor) patented technology. After finishing her PhD Ana integrated a Water Treatment Company (Enkrott Química that integrated Enkrott group in 2014) where she has been Innovation Manager for 11 years. Over such period she implemented a sound Innovation strategy by promoting, developing and applying innovative technological solutions/ approaches to real-life water problems while enhancing her scientific activities and capabilities. Most of the worked has been focused on the development and implementation of biofouling monitoring in water systems: cooling systems, reverse osmosis and drinking water networks, with the aim to prevent and mitigate its deleterious effect on such systems. Ana has also been involved on the study of eco-friendly disinfection strategies. To enhance the innovation potential of the company she promoted and Technically-Scientifically coordinated 2 co-promotion projects: project Vibs (QREN 2010/011470) - boosted the transformation of the nanovibration sensor developed in her PhD into an industrial technology and pBio4.0 (PT2020-33298) - focused on biofouling prevention in reverse osmosis systems. Ana was the scientific leader in Enkrott's participation under the European project AQUAVALENS (FP7, 311846, KBBE.2012.2.5-01) and integrated many others project proposals. While working at industry, Ana (co) supervised 4 master theses, published 2 book chapters, and led many cooperations with scientific and technological centers with National and International entities (like Procter and Gamble - USA, CETAQUA and ICFO, in Barcelona). Over the 11 years at industry, and in parallel with the multiple projects she implemented, Ana advised many industrial and service companies regarding Legionella mitigation. She coordinated the Company internal work on Legionella, including field studies and technological developments that resulted, for example, in the work presented at the 4th ESGLI Conference (2016), Legionella Trainings/ Seminars, risk assessments, and developed the 'Scoring for Legionella' (a freeware didactic tool, to assess cooling water systems in terms of Good Practices towards Legionella). In 2014 and 2019, she collaborated with the Portuguese Judicial Police investigation as a technical expert, regarding the Vila Franca de Xira and Francisco Xavier Legionella Outbreaks. In 2019, Ana returned to Academia and joined Biofilm's group at LEPABE to deliver high quality research. The combination of her scientific background in biofouling and biofouling monitoring with the real-life expertise is of paramount importance to bring new perspectives within the water framework challenges specially linked to: a) biofouling monitoring; b) dead-cells killed by different biocides impact the biofouling potential; c) Legionella prevention in real-field systems; d) biofouling mitigation in water and wastewater reuse. She is now supervising 2 PhD students and co-supervising 3 other PhD students. She is the Principal Investigator of LegioFilms project (doi.org/10.54499/2022.03523.PTDC), on the study of how Legionella colonization affects the meso and microscale properties of the biofilm and it spatial location through integrated monitoring strategies. She is also team member of eBiofilm (SurfSAFE (H2020 - 952471 (ERA-CHAIRS, 101087568) and PRESAGE (Aquatic/0007/2020, ID 375 JPIERANET) projects. In may of 2023 Ana has been elected to the Scientific Board of FEUP.
