Alexandre Quintas

My core research is focused on clarifying the biophysical events underlying misfolding diseases, such as Parkinson's disease and more recently, understanding the influence of drugs, such as cannabinoids, on these conditions. If biophysics and biochemistry of proteins have been driving my research since the beginning, in 2008, I had an innovative idea to implement the forensic science field in Portuguese academia that has challenged me to develop a broader scientific perspective. This extraordinary academic and scientific challenge has driven me into forensic toxicology and genetics. Currently, I am leading a BSc degree and an MSc degree in Forensic Sciences, running a Forensic Science Laboratory that provides services to Courts, and coordinating the Forensic Science and Psychology Research Line from the Egas Moniz Multidisciplinary Research Center, where my scientific laboratory of Molecular Pathology and Forensic Biochemistry stands. This vast amount of work is achieved by a large staff of lecturers, senior scientists, forensic experts and post-graduate students, which I am coordinating or supervising. Due to this extensive scientific, teaching and societal footprint, my network includes Courts (e.g. Sintra's Court), Police Departments (e.g. GNR), Forensic Laboratories (e.g. INMLCF), Hospitals (e.g. Garcia de Orta), as well National and International Scientific Research Groups. Since 2003 I have secured independent funding as Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-PI in several research and academic projects from Portuguese and European Institutions (total: >3000 K) and private academic organizations (>150 K). In addition, the Forensic Science and Psychology Laboratory I am heading supports MSc, MA and PhD students in Toxicology, Human Identification, Questioned Documents and Psychology, funding equipment and reagents, among other resources. I was awarded three FCT scholarships in my scientific career: MSc, PhD at Coimbra's University and Sabbatical at Lincoln University. I achieved >70 peer-reviewed publications, ten book chapters and edited a book. I have been an Expert evaluator for International Research Projects and Networks in Forensic Sciences. Institutionally. I have also been the post-doc adviser of 2 young Post-doc researchers and supervised 4 PhD students, >40 MSc students and >30 scientific traineeships. In 2012 I was part of the team winning the Pfizer Prize in Clinical Research. I had one career break after my PhD for health issues (2002-2004). Currently, I am a member of the Forensic Science Scientific Council of IUEM.
