I graduated in Applied Chemistry in Fac. Ciências e Tecnologia, Nova University, in 1998 and I completed my PhD in Biology in 2006, in the Lab. of Molecular Genetics (LGM) at ITQB NOVA. After two years as a post-doc in the LGM I became an Auxiliary Researcher at ITQB NOVA. Since May 2013 to present, I am Head of the Lab. Bacterial Evolution and Molecular Epidemiology at ITQB-NOVA. We are interested in the study of the mechanisms of evolution, pathogenesis, and dissemination of the natural populations and pandemic clones of commensal bacteria that became multidrug resistant and are major causes of nosocomial infections and for which treatment options are scarce. In this context we work closely with hospitals and clinicians in common research interests. Additionally, together with veterinarians we are trying to understand if animals and meat-processing chain can constitute a reservoir and vehicle of dissemination to humans of these multidrug bacteria that are causing disease in hospitals. With the goal of finding innovative solutions for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug resistant bacteria, we collaborate closely with Chemists to identify new antibiotics. We screen for the activity of new compounds against bacteria from our large culture collection and characterize the compound activity, mode of action and their physic-chemical features. In the last 6 years my team and I have contributed to important advances in the knowledge of the molecular epidemiology of coagulase-negative staphylococci – skin commensals and emergent nosocomial pathogens associated to medical devices infections. In particular, we revealed distinctive population structures and mechanisms of evolution and pathogenesis of the more pathogenic CoNS species (Staphylococcus epidermidis, S. haemolyticus and S. saprohyticus), challenging the established clinical paradigm that all CoNS are similar and that infections caused by all species and strains should be approached equally. Moreover, we have shown that the food production chain is a reservoir of antimicrobial resistant genes and multidrug resistant pathogenic bacteria to humans. I have published 1 book chapter and 49 papers in peer-reviewed journals that comprise 2256 citations (h-index=27). Between 2018-2023 I have published 15 manuscripts, of which I was corresponding/senior author in 10. These achievements were made in collaborations with top researchers in the area (USA: M. Otto, NIH; B. A. Diep, USCF; F. Lowy, Columbia Univ.; D. A. Robinson, Univ. Mississipi; A. Tomasz, Rockefeller Univ; DK: H. Westh, Hvridove Hospital; UK: E. Feil, Univ. Bath; S. Sheppard, Univ. Bath) among others. In the last 6 years I was invited to give several lectures (n=8), and presented multiple oral (n=7), and poster communications (n=21). Since the beginning of my Lab (2013), the research performed was supported by both national and international funding from 8 Research projects, of which I was PI in 7. As a head of Lab, between 2013-2023, I was successful in attracting more than 800 Keuros. During this period, 21 students were under my supervision (post-doctoral=5, PhD=5, Master=11) and 8 were under my co-supervision. I have been as well involved in organization of scientific meetings and symposiums (n=13), in S. epidermidis MLST database curation, participation in the jury panel of international grants, abstracts and fellowships (n=9). Also, I have joined initiatives with a social impact, namely as a consultant for quality (DGS, Ministry of Health). I have been also involved in academic activities: as lecturer in 2 Faculty degrees, 2 PhD and 1 Master programs; as examiner of 15 thesis (PhD=9, Master=6); and as a member of the scientific committee of the Medical Microbiology Master (NOVA Univ.). Additionally, I am member of the Scientific Council and Coordinator of the Biology Division of ITQB-NOVA.
