Rita Lourenço Paiva de Melo

I hold a degree in Chemical engineer from NOVA School of Science and Technology, Portugal (2003), and I pursued my Ph.D. in Technological Chemistry with Dr João Paulo Leal at the University of Lisbon, Portugal (2012). Part of my PhD was undertaken between the Isotope Institute in Hungary (2008) and the University of California, Irvine, USA in 2011. In 2013, I joined ITQB NOVA, Portugal, where I was a postdoctoral fellow under Claudio Soares Lab. Between 2014 and 2018, I worked as post-doctoral researcher at IST and, since 2018, I was appointed Researcher. From an academic standpoint, since 2021 I have been a visiting assistant professor on the master's programme in Computational Biology at the University of Coimbra, and in 2022 I was a visiting professor at the School of Health Technology, IPL in Lisbon. I was awarded a 1 FCT-funded project as Principal Investigator (PTDC/QUI-OUT/32243/2017) and 1 FCT-funded under National Network for Advanced Computing (2022.15874.CPCA.A2) as co-PI. The PTDC/QUI-OUT/32243/2017 project is focused on the study of protein-protein interactions as G protein-coupled receptors, addressing their importance as targets/biomarkers for novel drug design. Following a multidisciplinary approach, I enriched my expertise upon exploring the interface between computational tools and experimental work (in vitro and in vivo studies). Within this topic, in 2021 I was part of the winning team of the "Pick yoUR bRain" - Born from Knowledge 2021 award from the Innovation Agency. Also, I am involved in the retargeting of virus-like particles aiming at the specific delivery of drugs and/or imaging agents to cancer cells. While working on these two main research topics, I have fostered several other research collaborations as Irina S. Moreira (CIBB/UC), Z.H. Gümüs (Icahn School of Medicine, USA), A. Schiedel (Bonn University) and A. Bonvin (Utrecht University) where theoretical studies gain relevance for a better understanding of the experimental results. In summary, I have published 40 articles in journals and (co)author of 9 book chapters. I am actively involved in mentoring young researchers: 3 ongoing PhD students, 14 MSc (2 ongoing), and 7 undergraduate students (4 of them abroad). I have organized 3 workshops/conferences. My project management skills are evident in my involvement in several projects. In fact, 8 projects funded by FCT (1 as PI and 1 as co-PI), 4 international projects of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and 2 COST actions. Owing to my skills in computational biophysics, I am team member of the High-Performance Computing task force at IST. I was recently invited to be Guest Editor of a Special Issue on " Retargeting of Virus-Like Particles “at “Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology” (IF 5.882, Q1).

Sterilization of an Electronic Medical Device. Radiosterilization was applied to a medical device with a ¿programmable memory¿ to allow in vivo implantation. Irradiation on a Cobalt-60 facility at 25 kGy at a dose rate of 2kGy/h corrupted the memory. Therefore an alternative sterilization method using UV was developed and validated based on ISO 11737-1 and ISO 14937.
