Laura González García concluiu a sua tese de doutoramento em Marine Science, Technology and Management em março de 2019 pela Universidade de Vigo. Possui dois mestrados, em Oceanografia (2011, Universidade de Vigo), e em Biodiversidade e Ecosistemas (2012, Universidade de Vigo). Licenciou-se em Biologia pela Universidade de Santiago em 2009, cursando o último curso na Universidade dos Açores como Erasmus. Com uma ampla experiência trabalhando como guia de observação de cetáceos nos Açores, o trabalho de Laura tem reforçado a importância dos dados oportunistas como fonte válida de informação para o estudo dos cetáceos, apoiando e fortalecendo a ligação entre Ciência & Turismo. A sua investigação trata sobre tudo ecologia de cetáceos, incluindo distribuições temporais e espaciais, preferências de habitat e condições ambientais, e estudos de foto-identificação de cetáceos no Atlântico. Durante o seu doutoramento fundou o projeto de ciência cidadã "Sail & Whale", que ainda hoje segue em funcionamento, para recolher dados oportunistas de cetáceos em colaboração com velejadores no mar alto. Atualmente é Coordenadora Científico-Técnica na Futurismo Azores Adventures e investigadora afiliada ao Instituto em Ciências do Mar - OKEANOS, da Universidade dos Açores. Colaborou na autoria de 8 artigos em revistas especializadas, 2 capítulos de livro e mais de 40 posters apresentados em conferências científicas nacionais e internacionais. Publicou duas bases de dados oportunistas de ocorrência de cetáceos nos Açores (dados de whale-watching). Supervisou 12 teses de mestrado e 4 de grau, e orienta atualmente a três alunos de mestrado, um de grau e outro de doutoramento. Ainda, tem vindo a organizar diversos eventos de carácter científico nos Açores, incluindo diversos workshops e reuniões multidisciplinares,, com oportunidades de diálogo entre sociedade, ciência e governo, como o WAVES (Workshop on Advanced Vehicles for Exploration of the Seas - Outubro de 2023 e 2024, ~50 participantes), o Beyond Whale Watching (Maio de 2023, ~170 participantes), a IV Bienal das Baleias (Lajes do Pico, Outubro de 2023, ~100 participantes), e em maio de 2025, a 36ª European Cetacean Society conference (745 participantes de 51 países diferentes, 25 workshops, quatro eventos abertos à comunidade e três dias de sessões plenárias em Ponta Delgada).
