Hugo Martins currently holds a Walter Benjamin Position (DFG) at the Institut für jüdische Theologie, at the University of Potsdam. He completed his bachelor's degree in 2013, and a PhD in Early Modern History in 2018, both from the University of Lisbon. His doctoral thesis, which was approved by unanimity with praise and distinction, dealt with the social and religious history of the Portuguese-Jewish community of Hamburg during the 17th century. For that project he was awarded a three-year PhD scholarship by the Rothschild Foundation (Hanadiv) Europe, as well as a short-term grant by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). In 2014, he received a further academic grant by the Rothschild Foundation on the occasion of a research internship at the University of Hamburg, and more recently he was awarded a Gerda Henkel scholarship in Germany. His main fields of research are the Portuguese Empire, the history of New-Christians and the Sephardic Diaspora. Among some of his recent academic activities stand his role in the organizing committee of the International Conferences "Jews of Portugal and the Spanish-Portuguese Jewish Diaspora" (2018), and "Sephardi Jews between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean" (2019), as well as the Workshop "Jewish Plurality - The Past and the Present of the Iberian Matrix" (2018), all of which held at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon. He is, since 2021, editor of the academic journal "Hamsa. Journal of Judaic and Islamic Studies", together with Clara Almagro, José Tavim and Fernando Correia. Furthermore, he participated in international academic events in Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and UK, among which the workshops "Across Borders and Boundaries: Jews, Crypto-Jews and Conversos" (2017), held at the Institut für jüdische Studien, in Potsdam, and also "Writing on Religion in the Modern World: 16th-18th centuries" (2016), at the Sangalli Institute, in Florence. His most recent production include seven articles published between 2019 and 2022 in national and international peer-reviewed journals, two edited volumes and two authored books, one of which is in press, with publication planned for 2023. His articles have been published in some of the main academic journals within his field, such as "Ler História", "Interdisciplinary Journal of Portuguese Diaspora Studies", "e-Journal of Portuguese History", "Hamsa", "Jewish Culture and History", and "Cadernos de Estudos Sefarditas".
