Paula Mota is a Veterinary Doctor with a scientific career strongly centered on reproductive biology and Laboratory Animal Science, combined with solid experience in scientific project and facility coordination and significant international exposure. After an initial clinical career, she redirected her professional path toward research, completing a Master’s and a PhD in Cell Biology in the field of Animal Reproduction. As an FCT postdoctoral fellow, she developed alternative methods to study and restore fertility in endangered felids, integrating innovative experimental approaches and animal models. Her expertise in Laboratory Animal Science and Welfare was further strengthened through advanced FELASA-accredited training aligned with European standards (ECLAM track), alongside hands-on responsibilities as a Designated Veterinarian and officer responsible for Animal Welfare and implementation of the 3Rs. She has a strong coordination and leadership profile: supervising research teams, mentoring students, coordinating SPF and conventional animal facilities, overseeing animal welfare programs, liaising with national authorities (DGAV/ORBEA), and organizing and delivering certified training courses for researchers under European legislation. In parallel, she remains scientifically active as a researcher and consultant, helping bridge scientific goals with animal welfare requirements and offering a dual scientific–regulatory perspective. Her career also includes important international experiences, notably advanced training in Reproduction in the USA (MBL, Woods Hole) and long-term scientific collaboration with the German Center of Reproductive Medicine & Andrology (CeRA). There, she worked with additional animal models such as marmosets and explored strategies to restart spermatogenesis ex vivo, within the framework of an international cooperation project (FCT-DAAD). Overall, her profile combines translational research in reproduction, regulatory and technical expertise in laboratory animals, and strong scientific and institutional coordination skills, supported by extensive international experience.
