João Almeida is an enthusiastic and dedicated Molecular Biologist with a particular interest in human biology and brain diseases. His academic training has provided him with a solid foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of cell and molecular biology. During his bachelor’s degree, he completed an internship at iBimed, University of Aveiro, under the supervision of Professor Ana Gabriela Henriques, where he investigated aging and potential biomarkers of this process. In this internship, he also developed practical knowledge of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gained experience with Western Blotting. Throughout his master’s degree, he worked under Professor Miguel Oliveira at CESAM and acquired extensive experience in cell culture, particularly with lung cancer cell lines A549 and H460. During this period, he gained expertise in conducting cell viability assays, including the MTT and Resazurin assays, and became proficient in interpreting scientific data using Prism software. In December 2023, João was awarded a research fellowship at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, within the project SCA-CYP(omics) (ref. 2022.04788.PTDC), under the supervision of Dr. Rita Perfeito in the group of Professor Luís Pereira de Almeida. During this fellowship, he developed a wide range of techniques, including the production and manipulation of lentiviral vectors, cell culture and viral infection, as well as animal experimentation (genotyping, lentiviral injection, and brain sectioning). He also gained experience in immunohistochemistry, visible and fluorescence microscopy, and Western Blotting. In addition, João refined his skills in nucleic acid (DNA and cDNA) extraction and RT-PCR. In September 2024, João was awarded another research fellowship and joined CInTech – Technological Hub for Innovation, Translation and Industrialization of Complex Injectable Drugs (ref. 7131), under the supervision of Dr. Rita Perfeito and in the group of Professor Luís Pereira de Almeida. During this time, he further strengthened his expertise in RT-qPCR, in vivo experiments, behavioural analysis, and animal handling. His work contributed to a poster presented at BEBday 2025. João Almeida’s extensive background and practical experience make him highly capable of contributing effectively to research projects in the field of cell and molecular biology, particularly those focused on human biology and disease.
