Ana Marote obtained her BSc in Biomedical Sciences in 2011 and later completed her MSc in Molecular Biomedicine in 2013, both at the University of Aveiro. During her master's and a subsequent research fellowship, she worked at the Institute for Biomedicine at the University of Aveiro. Her work primarily focused on multidisciplinary projects aimed at advancing tissue regeneration, including the development of poly(l-lactide) electrospun-based nanofibers for neuronal differentiation, innovative powder formulations for bone substitution, and the utilization of electrical stimulation for the creation of active bone implants. In 2020, Ana Marote successfully obtained her PhD in Applied Health Sciences at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), collaborating with the Behavioral and Molecular lab (Bn'ML) at the University of Minho. Under the supervision of Dr. António Salgado and Dr. Luísa Pinto, her research explored the therapeutic potential of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) secretome as a promising cell-free therapy for Parkinson's disease. Her academic journey also included a valuable experience as a visiting PhD student at the iPSC Laboratory for CNS Disease Modeling at Lund University, under the supervision of Dr. Laurent Roybon. During this period, she gained expertise in stem cell biology, specifically in the generation, maintenance, and characterization of iPSCs from patient fibroblasts and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Additionally, she received training in the differentiation of iPSCs and mouse embryonic stem cells into midbrain dopaminergic neurons. Returning to ICVS, she successfully implemented these new techniques, focusing on the generation and characterization of iPSCs-derived MSCs. Until March 2023, she worked as a junior researcher at ICVS, on the development of innovative in vitro models based on human iPSCs. Her research aimed to unravel the underlying mechanisms of degeneration in Parkinson's disease while simultaneously contributing to the design of novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. During this period, she also took on the role of supervising three MSc dissertations and two final BSc projects, as well as organizing international conferences and a postgraduation course. Currently, she is a postdoctoral fellow at i3S, working within the group of Dr. Paulo Aguiar. In her current role, she is actively engaged in establishing human-based neuronal in vitro models to dissect the properties of neuronal circuits in both physiological and pathological conditions. Her scientific contributions are reflected in 26 peer-reviewed papers with over 600 citations and an h-index of 13, a book section and a registered patent (WO/2021/198927) titled "Compositions for Therapy or Treatment of Parkinson's Disease, Methods and Uses Thereof."
