Joana Caldeira graduated in Microbiology at the Biotechnology College of the Portuguese Catholic University and in 2011/12/09 got her PhD in Biomedicine (Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto). She has a total of 35 publications (23 research papers, 3 book chapters and 9 journal proceedings) with over 1000 citations and an h index=15 (Scopus April, 2025), and 2 provisional patent applications. Joana has been interested in understanding the role of the extracellular matrix at the cancer/regeneration interface and in exploring the way it can be manipulated to recapitulate initial developmental stages, improving current regenerative therapies, namely of intervertebral disc disease. She has secured funding as Principal Investigator from 7 national and international agencies including EUROSPINE, ON Foundation, AO Foundation, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and the European Commission, and has been a team member of 8 other projects. Joana has been distinguished with several awards, namely the L'Oréal Portugal Medal of Honor for Women in Science 2018, the EIT Jumpstarter, the Amyris BIG Impact Award and Women TechEU. Her research has been highlighted by several national news agencies. She is currently supervising 1 PhD thesis and co-supervising 1 MSc student. Joana has also co-supervised 1 PhD thesis, 1 FEBS short-term fellowship, 3 graduate thesis, 2 Erasmus+ internships and 8 Master thesis (2 as co-supervisor and 1 from the Erasmus Programme), as well as 2 research assistants and 3 internships. She has also presented her work in over 50 national and international meetings (with posters and oral communication either submitted or by invitation) and participated in several science communication initiatives either as a mentor, project coordinator or collaborator. Currently, Joana is also the chair of the i3S Fundraising Team, as well as CEO and co-founder of FetalDisc, Lda.
