André M. da Costa Lopes holds a PhD in Sustainable Chemistry from FCT/UNL since December 2017 and his thesis was focused on the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass with ionic liquids. In February 2018, he was a postdoctoral researcher at CICECO¿Aveiro Institute of Materials in the frame of European BBI JU project PROVIDES. In the frame of this project, he conducted novel research and contributed with new data regarding to the mechanisms behind biomass delignification with deep eutectic solvents (DES) towards an efficient cellulose pulp production. Since February 2020, he is a researcher in department of Forest at CECOLAB-Collaborative Laboratory towards Circular Economy and he is an official collaborator at CICECO. He has been developing green and sustainable technologies towards the valorization of three different matrixes: 1) lignocellulosic biomass; 2) technical lignins; and 3) black liquor; using alternative solvents to be implemented in chemical and bio-based industries. He was PI of the bilateral project BIOSURPLIER in a partnership with CNRS/University of Poitiers in the frame of the Program Hubert Curien (PHC)/Pessoa for 2019-21, aiming at biomass conversion into biosurfactants and bioplasticizers assisted by DES. He was a research member of BIOVINO (2019-22), a INTERREG V-A Spain/Portugal project, involving a consortium of Portuguese/Spanish entities aiming at green valorization of vineyard residues. He is currently a research member of PRIDES, a TKI consortium project - PRocesses for Industrial application of natural DES in pulp and paper activity (2019-23). Furthermore, he is participating in COST Action CA17128 (2019-23), a Pan-European Network focused on the research of lignin valorization with green chemistry methods, where he has been presenting all his works regarding lignin dissolution, conversion and nanoparticle preparation. Recently, as PI he was awarded a new bilateral project in the frame of Program Hubert Curien (PHC)/Pessoa (2022-23) in collaboration with CNRS/University of Lyon, aiming at the oxidative catalysis of black liquor and subsequent downstream separation of lignin derived compounds through CPC technology. He is also a research member of the national project CHESTFILM, funded by LA CAIXA foundation, in the frame of PROMOVE (2022-24), focusing on the valorization and transformation of chestnut residues into biofilms assisted by green technologies (e.g. DES). He is co-author of 40 peer-review publications (Scopus) published in leading international journals, in which one of his publications (Green Chem, 2017, 19, 4200-4233) was highlighted in annual collection Green Chemistry Hot Articles (2017). His work has been highly cited (>2600) equivalent to 65 citations/publication, h-index = 19, from which 8 publications were cited >100 times (Scopus). He is also the co-author of 6 book chapters, and he is an inventor of 3 Portuguese patents (PT106743-B, PT106947-B, PT108402-B). His outcomes have been disseminated as oral and poster presentations (>45) in international and prestigious conferences, such as EUBCE (2016), ISGC (2017-2019-2022), EWLP (2018), EuGSC (2021), among others, and he is attended several meetings supported by COST actions (CM0903, TD1203, CA17128). He has been establishing collaborations and networks with recognized researchers (89 co-authors in his publications) and he participated in different international scientific missions for expertise exchange (Estonia and Brazil). He has been supervisor and co-supervisor of 2 BSc, 6 MSc and 4 PhD students and research fellows, as well as mentor in short-term missions of 4 Post-Doc researchers and 1 PhD student. He also participated in outreach activities of Ciência Viva programmes as supervisor of young students. He is also a lecturer of the discipline Ciências Integradas na Natureza at University of Aveiro and Invited Professor in the PhD program of Science in Functional Materials from University Bernardo O-Higgins, Chile.
