I’ve obtained the PhD degree in Pharmacy (with specialization in Cell and Molecular Biology) in 2018 by the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon, the MSc in Biomedical Research in 2012 by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, and the BSc in Biomedical Science in 2010 by the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Algarve. I’m a Contracted Researcher in CIBB. So far, I’ve published 7 articles in journals, 1 book chapter and was awarded with 4 grants/prizes. During both my master and doctoral research I was focused on the study of cellular and molecular mechanisms associated with brain pathologies, namely gliomas and multiple sclerosis (MS). I have explored the developmental stage, from neural stem/progenitor cells to immature/early differentiated glia, which is more susceptible to malignant transformation. I’ve also studied the beneficial effect of some molecules that could be used as coadjuvants during temozolomide therapy in gliomas. During my PhD my scientific activity focused the role of S100B-RAGE axis in myelin-associated processes in pathological conditions. Studies included different models from in vitro primary cultures of differentiating oligodendrocytes–to evaluate changes throughout oligodendrogenesis–to ex vivo organotypic cerebellar slice cultures to evaluate de novo myelination, as well as demyelination and remyelination. Further studies included the in vivo model of MS, the EAE, where I’ve explored the expression of S100B-RAGE along the course of demyelination/remyelination, as well as the animal response to dimethyl fumarate–used in clinical practice for MS treatment. At the moment, I am investigating the role of mechanotransduction and its implications in OL differentiation/maturation, such as the mechanisms involved in biophysical signaling in OL under physiological and pathological conditions.
