Luis Manuel F. Melo is a Full Professor at the University of Porto, Faculty of Engineering since 2000, and Emeritus Professor since 2018. He published 130 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and was editor of 3 books. He works in the area(s) of Engineering and Technology with emphasis on Chemical Engineering and on Bioprocess Engineering, particularly in the field of Biofilms (Microbial Films) and Surface Contamination in general. He supervised 20 PhD theses and is presently the supervisor of 2 PhD theses and co-supervisor of one PhD thesis, all focused on biofilms, biofouling or surface contamination. He was chairman of 2 international conferences on Biofilms and 2 on Fouling of Heat Exchangers. His management experience in academic/scientific institutions includes: (i) Head of three research units (IBQF-Institute of Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry at the University of Minho , Portugal, 1996-2000, Center for Biological Engineering at the University of Minho, 1993-2000, LEPABE-Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy at the University of Porto, Portugal, 2001-2013); (ii) Vice-president of JNICT (presently, FCT-Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation), Lisbon, from 1994 to 1996 ; (iii) Director of the Biological Engineering Department at the University of Minho (1998-2000); (iv) Founder and Head of the Biological Engineering graduation Program at the University of Minho (1986-1992); (v) Vice-president of the School of Engineering at the University of Minho, 1992-1994; (vi) Founder and Head of the Bioengineering graduation Program at the University of Porto, 2007-2013. He is a Senior Scientist at LEPABE's research group "Biofilm Engineering Lab-BEL", University of Porto, since 2005 and Founder and Head of the Cultural Program of the Faculty of Engineering since 2001.
