I graduated with a degree in Biomedical Engineering in September 2020 from Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto and completed my Master’s in Biomedical Engineering in September 2022 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (UP). Since then, I have been working as a research fellow in the field of chronic kidney disease (CKD), focusing on the identification of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets to improve clinical outcomes and patient management. Within this research domain, I have been a key contributor to the project “Peroxidasin as a Novel Target in Chronic Kidney Disease Diagnosis and Treatment”, funded by FCT (ref: 2022.04524.PTDC). My work in this project has resulted in several significant outputs: I am the first author of a research article currently under revision (“Characterization of peroxidasin expression in histologically normal human adult and fetal kidney tissue”, DOI: 10.1101/2023.12.21.572848), the author of a short communication (“Peroxidasin expression is increased in intratumoural capillaries and in proximal tubular cells adjacent to clear cell renal cell carcinoma”, DOI: 10.1101/2024.11.15.623667), and first co-author of a conference abstract published in the Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation (NDT) journal (“Altered peroxidasin expression pattern in IgA Nephropathy”, DOI: 10.1093/ndt/gfae069.290). I have also been the first and presenting author of three oral communications, including presentations at IJUP 2022 (Porto, Portugal), the 61st ERA Congress (“Altered peroxidasin expression pattern in IgA Nephropathy”, Stockholm, Sweden, 2024), and the 62nd ERA Congress ("Peroxidasin expression in Alport Syndrome associates with histological kidney tissue damage", Vienna, Austria, 2025). In addition, I have contributed to six other oral presentations at national and international meetings, such as Encontro Renal – Sociedade Portuguesa de Nefrologia (SPN) (2021, 2022), IJUP 2023, the 35th European Congress of Pathology (Dublin, 2023), and the 21st European Congress on Digital Pathology (Barcelona, 2025). Driven by a strong collaborative spirit and eagerness to learn, I have actively contributed to several other studies as patent by being an author of an article on microRNA expression in CKD (currently under review, BioRxiv, DOI: 10.1101/2024.10.10.617547), another conference abstract in NDT (DOI: 10.1093/ndt/gfae069.485), and five additional oral communications presented at IJUP 2023, Encontro Renal- SPN 2023 (Porto), and both the 61st and 62nd ERA Congresses (Stockholm and Vienna). I have received two best abstract awards, one in basic nephrology and the other in clinical nephrology (SPN, 2023). Furthermore, I am involved in establishing two patient cohorts for CKD research, approved by the Ethics Committee of Unidade Local de Saúde de São João (Porto, Portugal). These cohorts have been instrumental in advancing our group’s research goals and fostering new collaborations, including with a recently funded FCT project (DecodAge, 2024). Since 2022, I have also served as a tutor for undergraduate medical students, introducing them to key laboratory techniques and the workflow of a translational research environment. Beyond the lab, I am actively engaged in science communication. I am a member of the cienciaetal initiative at i3S and have represented i3S at the Mostra UP science fair in 2022 and 2023. In January 2024, I enrolled in the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (UP), with the goal of pursuing a research career. I am deeply committed to translating research findings into meaningful clinical advancements for patients with kidney disease and to contributing to the scientific community through impactful research.
