Zélia Silva obtained her PhD in Biochemistry by Universidade de Coimbra in 2006 and currently works as a researcher at Universidade Nova de Lisboa at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia. Her research is mainly devoted to the study of the interplay between immune cells and diseases, particularly regarding the role played by glycans. The research themes are immune modulation; anti-cancer immunotherapy; dendritic cells; antigen-presentation; cancer biomarkers; prognostic; new therapeutic antibodies and new therapeutic drugs for CDG or Cancer. She supervised 8 master thesis and PhD thesis (2 ongoing) and provided laboratory training for students from different levels from undergraduates to PhDs. She is also enrolled in teaching Immunology to first degree students and Glycobiology to post graduates. She engaged in several national and international research projects and published with 102 different collaborators. She authored 24 peer-reviewed articles, 3 book chapters, 1 book, and a patent, which were cited 454 times (h index= 14), according to the web of Science. Her main achievements were the elucidation of the significant importance of sialic acid content to DC´s immunogenicity against tumor cells (Silva et al., Oncotarget (2016)). These breakthrough findings led to propose the use of glycoengineered DCs to boost their anti-cancer activity (patent WO2017002045 (05.01.2017). Along with the high potential for translational application, these findings have also raised challenging questions concerning the underlying molecular mechanisms. The contribution of sialic acid to MHC-I molecules stability at the cell surface and the modulation of MHC-I-TCR synapse was published (Silva et al., Pharmaceutics (2020)). Recently, she participates in the following projects: DCMATTERS- Dendritic cell-vaccines in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors as first-line therapy in patients with solid malignant neoplasms (ongoing); ProDGNE-Novel therapeutic approaches to target GNE myopathy (FCT: EJPRD/0001/2020, co-PI, ongoing); Exploring the therapeutic application of Gla-rich protein (GRP) in inflammation-related diseases using natural bioengineered nanovesicles (EXPL/BTM-TEC/0990/2021, ongoing); Aquaclima-Adapt, eco-innovative solutions to adapt aquaculture to climate changes (PTDC/CTA-AMB/0592/2021, ongoing); Advances in MUC1 Glycan Cancer Antigens: From structure to function in the fight against cancer (PTDC/BIA-MIB/31028/2017, ongoing), MBSTox- Multifunctional biomolecular systems for new methods of decontamination, protection and toxicological assessment (PTDC/BIA-MIB/31864/2017, ongoing).
