Sérgio F. Santos holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering, specialising in Energy, awarded by the University of Beira Interior (2017), where he also completed his MSc and BSc degrees in Electromechanical Engineering. He is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Beira Interior (UBI) and a researcher at leading national research centres, namely the Centre for Mechanical and Aerospace Science and Technologies (C-MAST) at UBI and the Research Centre for Systems and Technologies (SYSTEC) at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). His scientific activity focuses on the planning, operation and optimisation of electrical power systems, with particular emphasis on smart grids, large-scale integration of renewable energy sources, demand-side flexibility, energy communities, energy poverty, peer-to-peer markets, virtual power plants, energy storage, and distribution network resilience. He develops advanced deterministic, stochastic and robust optimisation models, often applied to real-world energy system problems and supported by artificial intelligence and innovative computational tools. He is the author of more than 30 articles in high-impact international scientific journals, several book chapters and technical books, and has a strong track record of participation in international conferences, with over 50 published conference papers. He has participated and continues to participate actively in nationally and European-funded research projects, including FP7, H2020/Horizon Europe, and FCT projects, assuming roles such as Researcher, Co-Principal Investigator and Supervisor. He has extensive experience supervising and co-supervising PhD and MSc students in the areas of sustainable energy systems, electrical engineering, data science and energy transition. His work has been recognised through scientific awards and distinctions, including highly cited papers in the Web of Science. His profile combines a solid theoretical background, a strong scientific output and close engagement with real-world energy transition challenges, actively contributing to the development of innovative, sustainable and resilient solutions for future energy systems.
