Doctor Iran Rocha Segundo is an Assistant Researcher and Invited Assistant Professor at CERIS, Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. His work lies at the intersection of Civil Engineering, Materials Science, and Applied Physics, focusing on environmentally responsive and multifunctional materials for transport infrastructure. He investigates how optical, thermal, and mechanical properties can be integrated to transform pavements into active systems capable of interacting with solar radiation and the urban climate. He began his work on asphalt materials in 2011 during his Civil Engineering degree at the Federal University of Ceará (Brazil), building a solid foundation in pavement engineering. He later completed his MSc (2018) and PhD (2022) at the University of Minho (Portugal), in an interdisciplinary setting combining civil engineering (CTAC and ISISE) and physics (CF-UM-UP). His career has included research and collaboration across Brazil, Portugal, Spain, and Belgium, linking fundamental science with applied engineering. His research trajectory has evolved from advanced asphalt mixture design to the development of spectrally engineered and responsive pavement systems. He has contributed to photocatalytic and self-cleaning surfaces for air quality improvement, thermochromic and optically adaptive materials for enhanced safety, and phase-change material (PCM) composites for thermal regulation. More recently, his work has focused on chromatic and spectral engineering of infrastructure materials, exploring how solar radiation influences pavement performance through mechanisms such as ageing, photocatalysis, thermochromism, and radiative reflectance. His doctoral research addressed nanomodified, photocatalytic, superhydrophobic, and environmentally active pavements, contributing to safer and more sustainable urban environments. He has been actively involved in several FCT-funded projects, including NanoAir, where he contributed to the development and validation of photocatalytic asphalt systems for urban air pollution mitigation, and MicroCoolPav, focused on thermal regulation strategies. He is currently the Principal Investigator of the (RE)NERGY-BUILD project, dedicated to recycled phase-change composite materials for energy management in construction systems. Under the FCT Scientific Employment Stimulus programme, he also led research on thermochromic road marking systems, integrating optical sensing and adaptive chromatic behaviour into infrastructure. Across these activities, he has consolidated a coherent research line centred on radiation–material interaction in transport infrastructure, combining spectroscopic methods, colorimetric analysis, and thermo-mechanical evaluation to develop climate-adaptive pavement systems. His work supports emerging approaches such as chromatic and spectrally optimized asphalt mixtures for urban heat mitigation. Doctor Rocha Segundo has authored approximately 45 Scopus-indexed publications, with over 1,200 citations and an h-index of 15. His contributions include a highly cited paper in Solid State Communications (top 1% in Physics) and a review in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews (IF 16.3), bridging optical materials science and multifunctional asphalt engineering. He has received several awards, including the Young Researcher Award (CINPAR 2024), Best Presentation Award (PFDM 2023), and Scientific Production Awards (ANPET 2022 and 2024). He is currently co-supervising four PhD candidates and two ongoing Master’s theses, and has previously supervised three Master’s dissertations and six undergraduate projects
