Florinda Costa was born in 1964 and completed her PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Aveiro in 1996 and the Habilitation in Engineering Physics in 2021. She is currently Associated Professor with Habiliation (since 2021) at the Physics Department of the University of Aveiro. She is vice-director of Physics Department since 2011 and board member of i3N/Aveiro (Institute for Nanostructures, Nanomodelling and Nanofabrication) Associated Laboratory, since 2012. She held the position of Diretor of i3N Aveiro between 2021 and 2023 and President of the Scientific Council between 2018 and 2021. Florinda Costa is currently Member of the European Network of Crystal Growth Executive Committee. Her main research interest is the processing materials using laser technology, namely Laser Floating Zone (LFZ), Laser Assisted Flow Deposition (LAFD), Laser Ablation in Liquids (PLAL), and laser surface treatments techniques. These techniques have been applied to the growth and treatment of a wide set of materials envisaging energy, biomedical and optoelectronic applications. Another area of interest is the synthesis, characterization and application of carbon nanostructures, namely nanocrystalline diamond (NCD), carbon nanotubes (CNT), graphenes and the integration of different carbon allotropes as hybrid materials using the CVD technology. These materials are being explored as physical sensors and biosensors, conductive substrates, heatsinks, MEMS, third harmonic generation, among others. More recently the laser technology is being explored to produced laser induced graphene (LIG) for biosensors and transductors. Published more than 230 articles in scientific journals and has 7 book chapters. According to Scopus has received more than 5290 citations (h-index: 38). Has 7 patents registered and organized many events. She supervised/co-supervised 17 PostDoctoral fellow, 8 PhD students and 40 MSc dissertation(s). Has received 13 awards and/or honors. She was the Principal Investigator (PI) in 5 projects funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) and participated in a total of 20 projects. Regarding projects with industries, she was the PI in 4 projects and participated in a total of 20 as a team member. She was also a team member of 3 projects funded by Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Centro. Additionally, she was a involved in 5 European funded projects.
