Karen Bennett has an MA and PhD in Translation Studies from the University of Lisbon (2003 and 2009 respectively), a BA in English and Related Literature from the University of York (1984) and a diploma in translation from the Institute of Linguists (1993). She lectures in translation (History and Theory of Translation, SciTech Translation, Research Methods etc) at NOVA-FCSH as Associate Professor, and is a member of CETAPS, where she coordinates the Translationality strand . To date, she has authored 2 monographs, 41 articles, 36 book chapters, 5 book reviews and 1 encyclopedia entry. She has also edited 6 multi-authored volumes and 11 journal issues. She is General Editor of the Scopus-indexed journal Translation Matters, and of the Routledge series Multilingualism, Lingua Franca and Translation in the Early Modern Period, and a member of the editorial board of the series Approaches to Translation Studies (Brill), as well as member of the advisory boards of the journals The Translator (Taylor & Francis), Discourse and Interaction, and Via Panorâmica, and of the book series Studies in Knowledge Production and Participation (Multilingual Matters). She belongs to several international networks and councils, including the History and Translation Network, Experiential Translation Network, and Council of Editors of Translation and Interpreting Studies for Open Science. She has a h-index of 17 and i10-index of 24 (with 1411 citations, 794 since 2018), mostly due to her work on translation and the transmission of knowledge, on which she has published extensively. Her article Epistemicide! The tale of a predatory discourse published in The Translator in 2007 was that journal's second most cited article right up to 2020, while her many other works on the subject all continue to be regularly cited. In 2023, she launched the international research project EPISTRAN (Epistemic Translation: Towards an Ecology of Knowledges), which explores the cutting-edge area of (inter-)epistemic translation. Within the project, she has already produced two articles, and in December 2023, organised an international conference on the subject, which will result in two edited publications. Another significant area of research is intersemiotic translation, with a focus on music. Having published several articles and chapters on this between 2003 and 2008, she recently returned to the topic, editing a special issue on Intersemiotic Translation and Multimodality in 2019 and organizing a short online course (Soundscapes: Translating from Music) in 2022, which has since become the subject of conference papers and an article. A proposal for a short monograph entitled Translationality in Music has just been accepted for publication in Routledge Focus series. A third area of research is the history of translation in which she has published several articles and chapters. The Early Modern period, as a pivotal moment in translation theory, has interested her particularly and in 2018, she organized an international conference on Multilingualism, Lingua Franca and Translation in the Early Modern Period, which led to the production of three edited volumes with Routledge (2022, 2023 and forthcoming). Finally, she is also interested in multilingualism and linguistic hybridity, and their implications for translation, co-editing a volume in 2019 on Hybrid Englishes and their implications for Translation, and an article updating her former argument about epistemicide to take account of the multilingual paradigm. This material has since become the subject for a curricular unit on the new inter-university doctoral programme in Translation Studies (Translation and Linguistic Hybridity in Intercultural Settings).
