Karen Bennett completed her PhD in Translation Studies at the University of Lisbon (FLUL) in 2009 with a dissertation on the subject of 'English Academic Discourse: its Hegemonic Status and Implications for Translation'. She also has an MA in Translation Studies from the same institution (2003), a BA in English and Related Literature from the University of York (1984) and a diploma in translation from the Institute of Linguists (1993). She lectures in History and Theory of Translation, Scientific Translation and Research Methods at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Nova University of Lisbon as tenured assistant professor. She is also a member of the Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies (CETAPS), where she coordinates the Translationality strand and edits the journal Translation Matters. Her research interests include translation and the transmission of knowledge; history and theory of translation; translation and performativity; lingua francas, multilingualism and linguistic hybridity; language and power; and intersemiotic translation and multimodality. To date, she has authored 2 monographs, 31 articles, 31 book chapters, 1 paper in conference proceedings, 3 book reviews and 1 encyclopedia entry. She has also edited 2 multi-authored volumes and 1 special issue (in addition to the twice-yearly issues of Translation Matters), and has recently signed a contract as Series Editor of a new Routledge series called Multilingualism, Lingua Franca and Translation in the Early Modern Period. She is a member of the advisory board of The Translator, and an associate of the ARTIS initiative (Advancing Research in Translation and Interpreting Studies) and Cultural LIteracy in Europe (CLE) network (SIG Intersemiotic Translation). She has a h-index of 13 and i10-index of 16 (with 839 citations, 558 since 2015), mostly due to her work on translation and the transmission of knowledge, on which she has published extensively: her article ‘Epistemicide! The tale of a predatory discourse’ published in The Translator 13/2 in 2007, continues to be the second most cited article in the journal today, while her many other works on the subject (such as 'Galileo's revenge: ways of construing knowledge and translation strategies in the era of globalization', Social Semiotics 17/2 2007; ‘The scientific revolution and its repercussions on the translation of technical discourse’, The Translator 17(2), 2011; 'The Semiperiphery of Academic Writing: Discourses, Communities and Practices', Palgrave 2014; ‘Discourses of knowledge: Cultural disjunctions and their implications for the language industries’, Ibérica 27. 2014 and ‘Towards an epistemological monoculture: mechanisms of epistemicide in European research publication’ in R. Plo Alastrué & C. Pérez-Llantada (eds), De Gruyter Mouton (2015) 9-35, all continue to be regularly cited. Her more recent publications include ‘Plain English: the “rhetoric of anti-rhetoric” and its consequences for Anglophone culture’ (English Studies 100, 7/8. 2019); ‘Foucault in English: the politics of exoticization’ (Target 29/2. 2017); a special issue of The Translator on International English and Translation (23/4, 2017) and the volume Hybrid Englishes and the Challenge of and for Translation: Identity, Mobility and Language Change (Routledge 2019), both co-edited with Rita Queiroz de Barros; and a special issue of Translation Matters (1/2, 2019) on Intersemiotic Translation and Multimodality. In 2015, she co-organized the 3rd conference in the PRISEAL ('Publishing and Presenting Research Internationally: Issues for Speakers of English as an Additional Language’) series in Coimbra and in 2018 '“A host of tongues": multilingualism, lingua franca and translation in the Early Modern Period' at the FCSH, as well as the series of graduate conferences 'New Voices in Portuguese Translation Studies' (2018, 2019, 2020).
