Paulo Nascimento is a Ph.D. student at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, funded by an MIT Portugal Program (MPP2030-FCT) Ph.D. scholarship. Holding both a BSc and an MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management from the University of Coimbra, Paulo has also been a Visiting Researcher at other institutions, including MIT CSAIL. His research, driven by real-world challenges primarily inspired by Additive Manufacturing-based scenarios, focuses on integrating Operations Research methodologies such as Optimization, Simulation, and Machine learning, to create versatile and broadly applicable advanced analytic solutions for practical Operations Management issues. His teaching experience spans both undergraduate and graduate level courses, covering topics like Flexible Production Systems, Continuous Improvement, and Quality Management. Additionally, Paulo has co-supervised master's dissertations in production scheduling and Additive Manufacturing, and worked alongside companies to improve their production scheduling.

2020/02 - 2020/05 The challenge consisted in the development of a solution that would allow a distribution center that was receiving a greater number of references, to optimize its internal logistics and to efficiently deal with variable demand, respecting various logistical restrictions. By developing an optimization-simulation model, it was demonstrated how to design a wave management system, and also, how to organize the warehouse, achieving the 4th place internationally, being this competition promoted by the American company Simio LLC.

2019/11/08 - 2019/11/09 The addressed challenge was to develop concrete and creative solutions in order to contribute to a healthy life and general well-being. All participants had access to a diversity of data sources, private and public, in order to carry out analyzes and create tools, with the main objective of building predictive and prescriptive solutions to a real problem, related to aging and rural isolation. This event was promoted by NOS SGPS, LTPlabs and Porto Business School, reaching the final stage of the contest, and obtaining the 7th place.
