Maria Vicente is currently the Coordinator of Project Development at Ciência Viva - National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture. Maria holds a degree in biochemistry and a PhD in Neuroscience, developed at the Champalimaud Center for the Unknown, with Zachary F. Mainen. After the PhD, Maria changed gears to Science Education and became responsible for the Science Education program at the Champalimaud Center for the Unknown. In 2017, Maria moved to the interior of Portugal, to the border county of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, to join the team that would start the first hub of the Open Science Hub Network - Plataforma de Ciência Aberta -, as Scientific Coordinator. Open Science Hub - Portugal (OSHub-PT) works as a Science and Innovation office from the Municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, aimed at involving schools and local/regional stakeholders in research and innovation processes, as tools for the sustainable development of local communities and territorial cohesion. OSHub-PT is part of the Ciência Viva Network. In 2019, the Open Science Hub Network - a consortium of nine European partners coordinated by Leiden University - was granted by the H2020 EU program and Maria became the international manager of this project at Leiden University. During the school year of 2021/2022, Maria was also an invited lecturer at University of Beira Interior, in a Science Communication course for PhD students. In 2023, Maria moved back to Portugal to coordinate OSHub-PT (until January 2025), where her roles ranged from strategy definition, identification of opportunities for projects and grant writing, partnerships and financing, project management, design, development and implementation of activities and events. Besides Open Science Hub Network, Maria has been/is involved in several other European projects, namely EU-Citizen.Science (in addition to several national funding sources). Also, during the first half of 2023, Maria worked as a Project Leader at SciCo - Greece, where she was responsible for the Communication and Dissemination strategy of the EU-funded projects XR4ED and augMENTOR. Finally, from 2020 to 2023 Maria was part of the Board of the Portuguese Network of Science and Technology Communication and is currently the Vice-President of the Portuguese Citizen Science Network (and one of the founding members).
