Mélanie R. Maia, PhD, is a Doctor of Global Studies - Global Health (2022, NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University of Lisbon). Master degrees in Biological Engineering (2008, University of Minho) and Hygiene and Safety at Work (2013, NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon). With wide industry and research experience (>10 years), Mélanie's focus is on Global Digital Health and Implementation Science. In her experience of global health missions, particularly in tropical countries, she has observed the value of PAHO-WHO in leading disease control and elimination programs. During her collaboration as a consultant and researcher within the mission of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Health Workforce Policy and Planning, at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Lisbon (since 2015), she has had the privilege of working with the tropical medicine challenges and developing solutions in a “Glocal” approach, within the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) setting. Also working as consultant researcher for WHO Health Workforce, Mélanie has been building the curriculum and implementing the program for an executive course on Human Resources for Health (HRH) Leadership and Management. Her experience in researching infrastructures for the implementation of local and global interventions in healthcare has allowed her to expand the network of support needed to achieve health outcomes, worldwide. Design science under participatory action research has been the main framework to address multimodal challenges in each of the national health systems, helping to address the heterogeneity of regional and local healthcare services (eg. SNS Portugal, SUS Brazil, SNS Cabo Verde, EU health federated architecture) and helping to shape the action of change within a sustainable process of knowledge translation with contextualization and local appropriation.
