Susana Peralta is a Portuguese Public Economist, who holds a PhD in Economics from the Université catholique de Louvain since 2004. She is an Associate Professor, with habilitation, at the Nova School of Business and Economics. She has been involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching of Public Economics, Microeconomics, Game Theory, Economics of Poverty, and Ethics in Public Policy. Between 2010 and 2014, she served as the Academic Director of the Masters in Economics, Research Masters in Economics, and PhD in Economics at Nova SBE. During her tenure, she secured funding under the FCT PhD Programme initiative. She has successfully advised six PhD students at Nova SBE, with placements as the Bank of Portugal or the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid. She took part in PhD Committees at the Universitat de Barcelona and the Catholic University of Leuven. Susana Peralta has three children, born in 2008, 2010, and 2014. Susana Peralta was trained as an applied theorist, and has made important contributions to the fields of tax competition and fiscal federalism. In the most recent years, she became interested in applied empirical research. Her applied empirical work explores policy reforms in Portugal to devise convincing causal identification strategies. She has published fourteen theoretical or empirical papers in top peer reviewed outlets as The Economic Journal, The Journal of Public Economics, The Journal of International Economics, Public Choice, The Journal of Urban Economics, Regional Science and Urban Economics. She has presented in more than 40 international seminars and conferences, and has more than 1000 citations on Google Scholar. As a PI, she had four FCT funded projects on political economy and public policy analysis. Susana Peralta is the co-organiser of the multidisciplinary conference Lisbon Meeting on Economics and Political Science (https://www.lisbonmeeting.org.pt/). She has participated in the organization or scientific committee of several conferences in her field, such as the Association for Public Economic Theory. She served as a referee for top journals such as the American Economic Review, The Journal of Public Economics, The Journal of Public Economic Theory, The Journal of Economic Theory, The Journal of International Economics, and The Journal of Urban Economics. Since March 2022, she is an Associate Editor of Economia Politica: International Journal of Analytical and Institutional Economics. She is the Scientific Director of the applied research project “Portugal, Social Balance”, a partnership with the La Caixa Foundation, which aims at producing three yearly reports on inequality and poverty in Portugal. She took part in several advisory task forces to the Portuguese government, and advised the Tax Authority on tax credits. She has been in the Economics Exam jury of career Diplomats in 2019 and 2022. She is part of the Portuguese team that collaborates with a Netherlands-based consultant that produces reports on Members States’ accountability and transparency for the EC. Susana Peralta is one of the top disseminators of Economics in Portugal, with 18000+ Twitter followers. She writes a weekly op-ed in a mainstream newspaper and participates in two weekly radio programmes. She is an economics commentator for the public television broadcaster. She is often interviewed by foreign press correspondents in Lisbon about the Portuguese economy, and issues of accountability, integrity and diversity in Portugal.
