Manuel Fernando Silva (M.F. Silva) is currently employed as a career assistant researcher in MicroNano Fabrication at the Center for Microelectromechanical Systems (CMEMS) at the University of Minho (UMinho) since May 2021. Also, He is the director of the MNFab (MicroNano Fabrication Laboratory) MNFab of the CMEMS-UMinho opened in Jan/2022 and was responsible with a sustainable development since Nov/2019 at strait collaboration with the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão (CMVNF) Portugal. The MNFab is a research infrastructure fully dedicated to MicroNano Fabrication for CMOS (Complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology) inserted at the new UMinho campus and was developed with environmental awareness (water/gas scrubber and low power equipment for alternative energy harvesting such solar cells). The main features of the MNFab facilities include the first UMinho clean room spanning 125m² with ISO7 class certification, as well as a 125m² characterization lab. These facilities enable collaboration with UMinho/CMVNF to compete for funding in the fields of environmental engineering and smart cities. M.F. Silva was born in Braga, Portugal in 1983 and his family started in 1972 one of the first still active companies (Bracicla) of recycling for environmental sustainability. He is graduated in 2008, in Informatics with specialization in Electronics, at the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave. In 2010 he obtained his MSc degree on Micro/Nanotechnologies at the UMinho, Guimarães, Portugal and Postgraduate Certificate in Intensive Erasmus Program 2012 BioElectronics for Medical Engineering (BELEM) in 2012 by University of Bordeaux at École doctorale des Sciences Chimiques. In 2015 obtained his PhD in Electronics and Computers Engineering at Dept. Industrial Electronics at UMinho and also in collaboration with Delft University of Technology (TUDelft). He is IEEE member and IEEE Photonic Society member with of h index of 8. M.F. Silva past work focused on thermoelectric materials and in the design and fabrication of energy harvesting systems for standalone microsystems but recently applied to environmental research for a better world. In the last 5 years, he published several journal papers related to MicroNano Fabrication focused in Atomic Layer Deposition for optics and to apply in biomedical devices or to environmental engineering (e. g. doi.org/10.3390/coatings13030638, doi.org/10.1016/j.vacuum.2020.109673, doi.org/10.1021/acsami.9b13254, doi.org/10.1109/JSTQE.2018.2889426, doi.org/10.1117/1.JBO.23.10.105004). He is author of 3 book chapters, 30 journal papers and 40 publications in conferences. Also, He participated in several research projects and since 2009 is involved in MicroNano Fabrication which involves research in opto-eletronics, CMOS technology fabrication (sputtering, electron beam, thermal evaporation and atomic layer deposition), research in photonics and materials technology for application in automotive image sensors, biomedical devices and environmental engineering.
