Miguel Viveiros Bettencourt. Dedicated to the study and development of new diagnostic tools and alternative therapies for the treatment of drug-resistant infections, such as multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and methicillin-vancomycin-resistant staphylococcal infections, using new technologies and new therapies incorporating non-antibiotic adjuvants for chemotherapy. Studied, over the past 25 years, the contribution of efflux pumps and membrane transporters to multi-resistant bacterial phenotypes and how we can prevent, reverse or reduce the level of resistance and recover the effectiveness of antibiotics to which the bacteria has become resistant. With an international team of collaborators, he documented mutations in drug targets and the corresponding associated minimum inhibitory concentrations for most anti-TB drug targets in M. tuberculosis and also the effectiveness of several new inhibitors for many of the MDR bacteria, in particular M / XDRTB. Specialist in laboratory diagnosis and characterization of resistance determinants by phenotypic and genotypic assays, using new technical approaches, such as the complete genome sequencing, nanotechnology and phenotypic assays in real time. Many of our studies have demonstrated the public health implications of antibiotic multidrug resistance and have contributed to the improvement of the currently recommended first and second line antiTB treatments.
