My research focus is motivated owing to my enthusiasm to develop decision-making tools and frameworks to understand and manage vulnerable coastal systems sustainably during the 21st century. My career was decisively resolved in studying sustainable coastal zone management and coastal hazard management after obtaining Very Good with Highest Distinction for my Ph.D. in Marine, Earth, and Environmental Sciences (Specialty in dynamics of the littoral zone) (University of Algarve). I´ve also earned a BSc degree in Civil Engineering, an MSc in Environmental and Water Engineering (University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka) and a second MSc degree in Water and Coastal Management (University of Plymouth, UK and University of Algarve, Portugal). Despite there are many studies aiming to understand the response of coastal landscapes to a range of natural and human forcing mechanisms, such knowledge and related projections have to be synthesized to develop a robust decision-making framework with probabilistic output for integrated and holistic management of coastal landscapes in response to natural and human-induced hazards expected in operational to decadal time scales. A novel and robust decision-making framework also should consider coupled human-coastal ecosystems to incorporate the socioeconomic aspects as well in the Context of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. At present, I work as a post-doctoral researcher in the multidisciplinary and collaborative project: Dunes - Sea Sand People, at the University of Lisbon. My objectives are to study the scientific aspects of dune evolution and management in four countries (New Zealand, Mozambique, the US and the UK) while working with other disciplines including history and anthropology. Under the project Inter-municipal Adaptation Plan for Climate Change of Algarve (PIAAC-AMAL), I developed and scripted models to predict the coastline evolution of Algarve due to the impact of waves and the projected SLR during the 21st century. For my PhD, I developed, scripted and implemented the hybrid Estuarine Sedimentation Model (HESM) to forecast and hindcast the long-term morphological evolution of the Guadiana estuarine system due to sediment infilling with a sea-level rise. In collaborative work with the University of Huelva, I studied the denudation rates in the Guadiana watershed using 10Be isotopes in estuarine sediments. I developed a novel method of estimating the denudation rate using the HESM approach, which gives results compatible with observed results. I have reviewed more than 30 manuscripts in journals and the 1st and 2nd-order drafts of the sixth assessment report of the IPCC Working Group 1 and the 1st-order draft of the IPCC working group 2. I presented results at national/international congresses. At the 10th World Ocean Summit (2023), I networked to discuss the challenges/opportunities in Blue Economy (The Economist). I am a member of the Eurocoast networking group. I have conducted lectures to undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students while supporting them to carry out research. I contributed to enhancing the knowledge of the public on coastal hazards and management aspects to strengthen public-private partnerships (e.g., in 2022 & 2023, I made oral and poster presentations, model exhibitions on coastal hazards and participated in field visits to educate children for Escola Padre Antonio Viera. Lisbon). I contributed to an article on coastal erosion in newspapers (Observador and Diário de Notícias). I scripted computer programs using advanced languages to develop numerical models to simulate coastal evolution due to natural and anthropogenic pressures. I have rapid learning skills, innovativeness, good team spirit and independent working skills. I am glad to learn new multidisciplinary skills to broaden my knowledge by crossing different disciplines such as coastal engineering, environmental management, economics, history and anthropology.
