Sandra Carvalho has accomplished her bachelor degree in Biochemistry in 2005 at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal, and her PhD degree in Biochemistry in 2012, specialization Microbial Physiology, at Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica, Universidade Nova de Lisboa/UNL (ITQB NOVA, Portugal), under supervision of Dr. Ana Rute Neves (ITQB NOVA) and Prof. Oscar Kuipers (MolGen, RUG, The Netherlands). Aiming to tackle the problem of bacterial resistance to antimicrobials, she has joined the lab of Prof. Lígia Saraiva at ITQB NOVA in 2014, where she remains until today, first with an awarded highly competitive FCT post-doctoral fellowship (4.5 years), and then with a research DL57 contract with UNL (since Oct 2018). In the last years, her research is dedicated to the study of metabolic strategies used by pathogens to resist antimicrobial stresses, and the finding of metabolite biomarkers for early identification of lower respiratory tract infections, for which she won FCT financial support in two highly competitive calls. Her work has originated several published papers in international peer-review journals, 7 as 1st author, 2 of which she is also corresponding author (2018, 2019), 1 as last and corresponding author (2023), and 1 peer-reviewed book chapter (1st author, 2022) (total of 632 citations). She has been presenting her work in conferences (orally and as poster), participating and organizing outreach activities, supervising (master, PhD, post-doc), teaching and reviewing articles for several Journals.
