I earned my PhD in Molecular Pathology and Genetics in 2025 at the Institute for Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS), University of Porto. My doctoral thesis, entitled “Drug Repurposing as a Strategy to Overcome Ovarian Cancer Chemoresistance,” explored innovative approaches to address chemoresistance in ovarian cancer, one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women. During my PhD, I focused on repurposing existing drugs as a potential strategy to treat chemoresistant ovarian cancer, providing promising insights into alternative therapeutic approaches. I previously completed a Master’s degree in Oncology in 2019 at ICBAS, University of Porto, where I developed a strong foundation in cancer research, and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2016 at the University of Aveiro. This academic progression laid the groundwork for my deep interest in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer biology, particularly ovarian cancer, and in exploring therapeutic strategies to improve patient outcomes. Currently, I am a research collaborator at the Toxicologic Pathology Research Laboratory, part of the Applied Biomolecular Sciences Unit (UCIBIO) at the University Institute of Health Sciences (IUCS), Advanced Polytechnic and University Cooperative (CESPU). In this role, I am involved in several key research initiatives aimed at advancing the understanding and treatment of ovarian cancer. My research has led to important contributions to the field of ovarian cancer, including: 1. Creation of ovarian cancer patient-derived cultures for drug sensitivity screening: I developed a robust biobank of patient-derived cultures obtained from ovarian cancer malignant ascites, enabling more accurate and personalized testing of potential therapeutic agents. These models have been pivotal in identifying new drug candidates for treating resistant forms of ovarian cancer. 2. Generation of chemoresistant high-grade serous carcinoma cell lines: I successfully generated two high-grade serous carcinoma cell lines with a double-chemoresistant phenotype to carboplatin and paclitaxel. These cell lines are essential tools for studying the molecular mechanisms underlying drug resistance and for testing new therapeutic strategies. 3. Identification of synergistic effects of combination therapies: I identified promising synergistic effects between conventional chemotherapy agents and drug repurposing candidates, supporting the development of combination therapies to overcome chemoresistance in ovarian cancer and opening new therapeutic avenues for patients with resistant tumors. 4. Immunohistochemical characterization of ovarian cancer malignant ascites and tissues: I conducted detailed immunohistochemical analyses of malignant ascites and tissue samples from ovarian cancer patients, providing valuable insights into molecular markers associated with disease progression and therapeutic response. I have authored 14 peer-reviewed scientific articles, contributing significantly to the scientific community’s understanding of ovarian cancer. I currently have an H-index of 8 (Scopus), reflecting the impact of my research. I have also contributed to two book chapters, broadening my academic and scientific outreach. Throughout my academic career, I have been actively involved in the scientific community, having participated in 31 national and international scientific events focused on ovarian cancer, chemoresistance, and drug development. I have also co-supervised four undergraduate theses, contributing to the training and mentorship of emerging scientists. My scientific contributions have been recognized with two prestigious awards and/or honors, and I have been actively involved in several competitive research projects.
