I earned my PhD in 2007 from the University of Porto and the Marine Biological Association of the UK, where my research focused on biogeographic changes in rocky intertidal species along the Atlantic coast of Europe. From 2007 to 2013, I held a postdoctoral position in Dr D. S. Wethey’s laboratory at the University of South Carolina (USA). During this period, I substantially expanded my expertise in programming, modelling, and climatology, while also developing skills in electronics and conducting extensive fieldwork on both coasts of the United States. Since 2013, I have been an independent Assistant Researcher at CIBIO, University of Porto, and have led my own research group since 2017. My h-index is 35. I have co-authored 2 book chapters, 3 conference proceedings, 9 datasets, 1 CRAN R package, and 73 peer-reviewed research papers, accumulating more than 5,150 citations (Google Scholar). Overall, 91% of my publications are in journals ranked within the top 25% by CiteScore (Scopus), and 54% are among the top 15% most cited papers worldwide. I was either lead or senior author on 42% of my publications. Nine papers were published in major multidisciplinary journals, including Nature, Nature Climate Change, Nature Communications, PNAS, TREE, and Scientific Reports. My research focuses on climatic reconstruction and analysis, demonstrating the key role of temperature in shaping both modern and historical coastal communities. My research group is currently the only one studying coastal biodiversity and biogeographic change along the entire Atlantic coast of Europe. We have led the development of rugged autonomous temperature loggers capable of operating at the spatial and temporal scales relevant to organisms. This technological advance represents a major breakthrough, transforming not only our own research but that of hundreds of scientists worldwide. It enabled the establishment of the Coastal Temperature and Biodiversity Observation Network (CCTBON), the largest of its type, spanning both Atlantic coasts from the Arctic to the Antarctic, including most mid-Atlantic archipelagos. My research has received wide media coverage in print and broadcast outlets and was recently highlighted in Science. To date, I have secured €829k in salary grants, €805k as principal investigator in project funding, €1.347M as co-principal investigator, and €1.373M as a team member, totalling €4.35M in competitive funding. I have supervised 8 MSc and 3 PhD students to completion and currently supervise 4 postdoctoral researchers, 4 PhD students, and 2 MSc students. I am a founding member of ElectricBlue CRL, a spin-off company dedicated to the development and application of advanced electronic instrumentation for physiological and environmental monitoring, and biologging. I have served as a reviewer for seven funding agencies, including Horizon 2020 and NASA, and for 75 manuscripts for 33 different journals (including Nature Communications, Nature Ecology and Evolution, PNAS, and The American Naturalist). I have twice been awarded the title of “Top Peer Reviewer” and am currently ranked in the 96th percentile for verified peer-review contributions in Web of Science. I am an Associate Editor of Limnology and Oceanography: Methods and have served as an external evaluator in four doctoral vivas. I have delivered 37 presentations at international congresses and workshops, including 30 invited talks, as well as seminars across Europe and the United States. In 2010, I was invited to present my research at the Portuguese Parliament. I was also an invited speaker at GLEX 2021 and delivered keynote lectures at the 11th (2016) and 15th (2025) International Temperate Reef Symposia. Since 2022, I have been an Invited Assistant Professor at ICBAS, University of Porto. I am currently Co-director of the MSc course “Marine Biology and Ecology”. Between 2022 and 2024, I also served as Co-director of the BSc course “Aquatic Ecology”.
