I started my academic career in the Biotechnology degree in the University of Algarve, during which I did two internships. The first, voluntary, was dedicated to the study of cellulose dissolution in several solvents for its later use in microemulsions for essential oils encapsulation. The second was the final graduation internship where I developed oil-in-water microemulsions based on cellulose, for the subsequent encapsulation of essential oils, which I had the opportunity to help publish the work as a co-author in an ISI paper. Carbohydr Polym. 2021;252(September 2020):117092. doi:10.1016/j.carbpol.2020.117092) I continued my academic career in the master's degree in Bioengineering and Nanosystems in Instituto Superior Técnico where I had the opportunity to deepen my knowledge in micro and nanotechnologies. I did my master thesis entitled "Glutathione-Responsive Breakable Nanoparticles for Controlled Doxorubicin Release" with professors José Paulo Farinha and Carlos Baleizão, where I developed a controlled drug release system, based on hybrid mesoporous silica particles containing disulfide bonds that break when present to tumoral concentrations of glutathione in the form of a redox responsive system. During this time, I received a research initiation fellowship (BL136/2021) from the project Verão com Ciência no CQE IST-ID (1801P.01106). I had the opportunity to share the work developed in the shape of a scientific poster in the 5th International Caparica Symposium on Nanoparticles/Nanomaterials and Applications 2022 and also with an oral presentation at CQE Days 2022. After finishing my master degree, I had the opportunity to continue my work with professors José Paulo Farinha and Carlos Baleizão, in the form of a research fellowship (BL211/2021_IST-ID), where I continued to develop my thesis work, focusing on the optimization of the nanocarriers, by studying new synthesis formulations in order to enhance their controllable release capabilities, under the project "SafeR - Safer formaldehyde resin composites using smart nanoparticles" (PTDC/CTM-COM/1581/2021), funded by FCT. Currently, I have a doctoral scholarship from FCT (2023.03193.BD), following the PhD program in Material Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, by developing the topic "Light-propelled Janus nanovehicles for drug delivery". In this project silica nanoparticles will be turned into Janus nanoparticles, by decorating half of the surface with a gold nanoshell, using our novel approach of growing a single ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) to work as a mask for the production of the JNPS as well as the container, for both the anti-cancer drug and the targeting moieties.
