Bioprocess engineer and researcher with a PhD in Refining, Petrochemical and Chemical Engineering, specialized in the development of sustainable bioprocesses for biomass intensification, selection and operation of aerobic, anaerobic and photosynthetic mixed cultures, and the production, extraction and characterization of bio-based products. His research activity lies at the interface of industrial biotechnology, biorefinery design and process engineering, with particular emphasis on mixed microbial culture strategies for resource valorisation, including the production and characterization of biopolymers, volatile fatty acids (VFAs) profiling, microbial group identification by microscopy, and the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate-based films through solvent casting approaches. He has conducted experimental work from laboratory scale to pilot scale (up to 200 L), ensuring robustness, reproducibility and relevance under industrially realistic operating conditions. He is the author/co-author of three peer-reviewed international scientific publications in Q1 journals addressing sustainable bioprocessing and separation technologies, namely: (2026), DOI: 10.1016/j.seppur.2025.135616; (2025), DOI: 10.1016/j.seppur.2024.128510; and (2022), DOI: 10.1016/j.cej.2021.131908. He has presented more than ten scientific communications, both oral and poster, at national and international conferences in the fields of chemical engineering, biotechnology and bioprocessing, including CHEMPOR, European Federation of Biotechnology Congress, Ciência – Encontro com a Ciência e Tecnologia em Portugal, EcoBio, and international symposia focused on biopolymers, microbiology and sustainable biotechnologies. His research trajectory includes active participation in several competitive funded projects at European and national level. At European level, he contributed to H2020 projects MULTI-STR3AM (BBI-JU No. 887227), focused on sustainable microalgae biorefineries; GloPACK (H2020-BBI), addressing circular bio-based packaging through PHA production; Res-Urbis (H2020), dedicated to the recovery of resources from urban biowaste; and NoAW – No Agricultural Waste (H2020), centred on waste valorisation through mixed microbial cultures. At national level, he participated in the COMPETE2020 ECO2COVID project, involving the design and operation of membrane-based processes for concentration and clarification of complex biological samples under industrially relevant constraints. Methodologically, his expertise covers mixed culture process selection and operation, formulation and application of deep eutectic solvents and natural deep eutectic solvents, liquid–liquid biphasic systems, membrane-based separations, centrifugal partition chromatography, and bioreactor operation and optimisation. This work is supported by advanced analytical and characterization techniques, including HPLC, GC, UV–Vis spectroscopy, SDS-PAGE and optical microscopy. His research consistently integrates chemical engineering principles with biological systems, targeting scalable, resource-efficient and sustainable process solutions aligned with circular bioeconomy objectives.
