João received his degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Coimbra, during which he carried a MSc thesis in bioinformatics and machine learning approaches to genetic data at the University of Pavia, Italy. He completed his PhD in Health Sciences - Biomedical Sciences in 2016, at the University of Coimbra, during which he was particularly interested in the application of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalographic (EEG) data to study cognitive neuroscience and visual perception in humans. Afterward, he put a clear translational focus in his research efforts, namely on the use of neuroimaging to study human brain structure and function, both in the context of health and disease. He had a postdoc position in a project with the objective of fMRI and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to predict neurodevelopmental outcomes in newborns with perinatal asphyxia. João was then awarded in an international highly competitive scientific employment program (FCT¿s individual CEEC program) for personal funding, and secured funding as the Principal Investigator of a project (FCT¿s R&D projects) to investigate novel multimodal imaging biomarkers of neuronal connectivity in multiple sclerosis. In parallel, he was involved in several other data science and medical imaging projects aiming at developing brain imaging biomarkers in clinical populations (e.g., genetic spinocerebellar ataxia type 3, diabetes type 2, neurofibromatosis type 1, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder). The recognition of his qualifications, both at the scientific and management level, led to the invitation to integrate the Executive Board of the Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research (CIBIT), as well as to develop and coordinate one of its strategic work packages, for research on radiomics and data science in medical imaging applied to neuroscience, cardiology, and oncology. In 2022, João was competitively admitted to the Short-term Research Internship Program at the University of Texas at Austin, under the UT Austin-Portugal program, and was therefore a visiting scholar at UT Austin, during which period he was trained at the Biomedical Imaging Center. Currently, from April of 2023, João is a postdoctoral researcher at the Neuropsychiatry Unit of Champalimaud Research, at Champalimaud Foundation. He is working mainly in an ERC-funded project to investigate feeding behavior with several data types and analyses techniques, although he also integrates other projects in the Unit, mainly providing expertise in biostatistics and data science applied to medical imaging data. João authored/co-authored 42 articles in journals and conferences, 11 as first author and 8 as last author. João has also been reviewer of 21 papers in multidisciplinary journals and carried editorial activities in 3 journals, including the coordination of 1 research topic. In addition, he has done 27 oral and poster communications as presenter and co-authored other 71 communications in national and international conferences. João delivered 14 invited oral presentations as well and received 10 awards for scientific outputs. João was the Principal Investigator of a competitive project (250K¿) and co-PI of another project (250K¿). He has supervised 1 postdoc, 4 PhD students (ongoing) and 9 MSc students (8 concluded, 1 ongoing). João teaches medical imaging seminars in several courses and created the course of ¿emergent biomedical technologies¿ for undergraduate, master, and doctoral students of Biomedical Engineering, Medicine and Pharmacy. Finally, João was involved in the organization of several scientific events and public science dissemination, such as a symposium at the FENS Regional Meeting (FRM) 2021 entitled ¿Brain imaging in neuropsychiatric disorders: innovation and translation¿, the 7th Iberian Congress on Perception in 2017, and the 1st ISMRM Iberian Chapter Annual Meeting in 2021.
