Leonor Morgado graduated in Applied Chemistry-Biotechnology in 2006 and completed a PhD in Biochemistry in 2012, both at NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA-FCT). During her PhD, Leonor studied small periplasmic multiheme cytochromes from Geobacter by several complementary biophysical techniques with emphasis on NMR spectroscopy, under the supervision of Prof. Carlos A. Salgueiro. Throughout this work, Leonor was a visiting scientist at Prof. Marta Bruix's Lab (IQFR-CSIC, Madrid, Spain) for NMR spectra acquisition and analysis, and also at Prof. Derek R. Lovley's Lab (University Massachusetts, USA) for a microbiology internship. In 2013, Leonor moved to Switzerland for a PostDoc at the Biozentrum, University Basel, to work with Prof. Sebastian Hiller. During a 4-year time, Leonor studied proteins involved in the outer membrane protein biogenesis of Gram-negative bacteria, acquiring expertise in different biophysical methods towards the characterization of challenging systems. In this period, Leonor was awarded a Grant from the Research Fund Junior Researchers from the University of Basel (71k euros). In 2017 Leonor returned to Portugal to work at UCIBIO-NOVA-FCT, after obtaining a competitive postdoctoral grant from FCT to study membrane proteins from Geobacter. Since then, Leonor supervised 8 BSc (4 as co-supervisor), 4 MSc and 1 PhD students, and is currently the supervisor of 1 PhD student and one BSc student. Leonor has been involved in outreach activities and in 2017 co-founded LUPA-LAQV&UCIBIO Postdoctoral Association and organized events within UCIBIO and with other postdoc associations. Presently, Leonor is part of UCIBIO Communication Working Group. Leonor Morgado has published 47 papers in international peer-reviewed journals (18 as first author, 4 as corresponding author, 5 Reviews) and 1 book chapter, with an h-index of 20 (Scopus) and over 1k citations. In 2012 she was awarded a LOréal Portugal Medal of Honor for Women in Science (20k euros), and in 2013 an Honorable Mention for the António Xavier Prize for the best PhD thesis in the field of Magnetic Resonance in Portugal. In 2021, Leonor was invited to participate in 'Mulheres na Ciência' Photobook 3rd edition, an initiative from Ciência Viva to honor Women in the different scientific fields in Portugal. In June 2022 Leonor became an Assistant Researcher (CEEC Individual) at UCIBIO-NOVA-FCT and, since December 2024, is an Assistant Professor at NOVA FCT. Currently, her research focuses on the understanding of the respiratory metabolism of electroactive bacteria and collaborates in interdisciplinary projects with her expertise in biomolecular NMR for the characterization of proteins and peptides.
