Artur Filipe Rodrigues is a Research & Innovation specialist with over a decade of experience in Biotechnology and Nanomedicine. Holding a PhD from the University of Manchester (UK) and an MSc in Molecular Biotechnology from the University of Aveiro (Portugal), he has played a pivotal role in various groundbreaking initiatives. Notably, his contributions to the EU Graphene Flagship Project provided crucial preclinical evidence on the pharmacology and toxicology of graphene-based materials, culminating in the first-in-human clinical trial involving controlled exposure by inhalation (NCT03659864, DOI: 10.1038/s41565-023-01572-3). As a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Widening Fellow (2020-2022, EUR 160k), Filipe was the PI of a project exploiting his expertise in graphene to formulate nanocomposites for wireless electrical stimulation of neural cells using light. He has been at the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) of the University of Coimbra (Portugal) since 2019, where he has developed nanoformulations for the delivery of biologics, including enzymes and mRNA, for gene editing in the brain and skin. This research has led to the filing of a patent application (WO2023037311) protecting a formulation capable of precise in vivo mRNA delivery to fibroblasts. This technology has helped CNC attracting European collaborations (e.g. EIC Pathfinder Open project Piezo4Spine) and resulted in 1 MSc thesis co-supervised by Filipe. His research accomplishments were recognised by his nomination as an Emerging Investigator in 2023 by the journal Nanoscale (RSC). Passionate about bringing therapeutic innovation to patients, Filipe served digital health start-up iLoF (Portugal/UK) as Biochemistry Lead, leveraging his technical skills to explore strategic opportunities and partnerships in the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors. He returned to CNC in 2023 to support therapeutic innovation in Regenerative Medicine. Overall, Filipe has interacted with 90+ authors (15+ nationalities), publishing a total of 21 articles in international peer-reviewed journals (18 in the last 5 years) and 1 book chapter, which have accumulated 850+ citations (h-index = 15). His research findings have been presented at 12 international conferences, where he won 2 awards. He has been engaged with innovation and knowledge dissemination through the organisation of scientific events (1 summer school) and active participation in numerous public engagement events.
