Sofia Maia is a sociologist and a PhD student fellow at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and at the Faculty of Medicine of Ludwig Maximilian of the University of Munich. She is also a researcher at the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto. She concluded a degree in Sociology from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto in 2017. During her degree, Sofia studied at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Barcelona (Spain) under the Erasmus+ Mobility Program (six months, 2016-2017). In 2019, she concluded a master's degree in Sociology from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto, with a thesis titled "The silence of the defendants, the victim's guilt: a sociological proposal in the domain of the crime of domestic violence" with the mark of 19/20. She obtained a postgraduate degree in Project Management in Development Cooperation from the Catholic University of Portugal in 2021. In January 2020, Sofia participated in HARMED - socioeconomic and health determinants of elder abuse" project (PTDC/IVC-SOC/6782/2014), coordinated by Professor Isabel Dias. The project was based on a mixed methodological approach. Its main objective was to evaluate the social, economic, and health determinants of abuse of older people at the European and Portuguese contexts. This project was based on a population cohort - EPIPorto - created and coordinated by ISPUP. Since then, Sofia has participated in the "Cleaning during a pandemic: between precariousness and health risks for workers in cleaning services" project (FCT - GENDER RESEARCH 4 COVID-19, Ref. 063), focused on health risk exposure in female cleaning service workers, among other national and international social, health, and communication research projects. The projects were promoted by the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto, the ISPUP, and the School of Psychology of the University of Minho. She is currently working on the MERIT project - MothER Income InequaliTy (SGS3A2), coordinated by Professor Teresa Leão. Sofia has authored articles published in journals, reports, and an encyclopedia entry. She has given oral presentations at conferences organized by the University of Porto and the University of Lisbon (Portugal), University of Navarra (Spain), among other international institutions. She collaborated in organizing conferences, project seminars, and workshops. She is currently part of the Health and Policies Lab, Line 2 - Syndemics, health inequalities, and vulnerable populations, from the Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Population Health. During her academic and professional career, Sofia has developed essential skills: collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, performing literature reviews and policy analyses, communicating results, and organizing meetings with the scientific and civil community. She participated in volunteer projects in health and education domains with vulnerable groups, such as children and older people, which stemmed from her greater scientific sensitivity to critical social realities.
