Felisa Rey was born in O Grove (Spain). She holds a degree in Marine Sciences (University of Vigo, Spain) and MSc in Marine Resources (University of Porto, Portugal & University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain). In 2016, she received her PhD degree in Marine Sciences and the Environment from University of Aveiro. During her PhD, Felisa acquired expertise in analysis of marine samples using physiological, biochemical, mass spectrometry and lipidomic approaches. In 2017, she was awarded with a Post-Doctoral fellowship from Fundação Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT, Portugal), to unravel the mechanisms that allow photosynthetic sea slugs to sequester and retain functional chloroplasts inside their cells, using lipidomic mass spectrometry-based analyses. In 2019, after a very competitive international competition (CEEC-Individual), she was awarded an FCT researcher position (CEEC call) to work decoding the process of endosymbiosis in sacoglossan sea slugs. Currently, she integrates the scientific committees of three projects related with marine sciences: Omics4Algae - Lipidomic tools for chemical phenotyping, traceability and valorisation of seaweeds from aquaculture as a sustainable source of high added-value compounds; TraSeafood - Tracing the Geographic Origin of Seafood as a Pathway Towards the Smart Valorization of Endogenous Marine Resources and GENIALG - GENetic diversity exploitation for Innovative Macro-ALGal biorefinery. She is editorial board member of Scientific Reports and was guest editor of a special issue of Antibiotics "Antimicrobial Lipids from Plants and Marine Organisms" (ISSN 2079-6382). She also collaborate as reviewer in several international journals such as Frontiers in Marine Sciences, Scientific Reports, ICES Journal of Marine Science, Journal of Phycology or Marine Ecology, among others. Felisa was monitor and member of the organizing and scientific committees in the 2nd and 3rd edition of Practical Courses on Mass Spectrometry: Advanced Course on Lipidomics (University of Aveiro, 2018 and 2019) and is member of the organizing and/or scientific committees of several scientific meetings (e.g. Lipids in the Ocean, Workshop of Lipidomics). During her professional career, she have collaborated in several educational projects in public and private institutions such as AquariumGalicia, public entities (Concelho do Grove, Deputacion de Pontevedra) and environmental consulting companies (Hidria: Ciencia, Ambiente y Desarrollo, S.L.). Her current research interests include marine lipids, solar-powered animals, mixotrophy, macroalgae and ecology of marine invertebrates.

2019/07/19 - Current Demonstration of the project HULK Marine environments represent a box of surprises where it is possible to find singular associations that inspire researchers. One of them is the combination of photosynthesis and animals, two apparently incompatible terms that merge in marine sea slugs. These animals are the only one known to retain functional chloroplasts from their algal food. These stolen chloroplasts (kleptoplasts) remain functional from different periods of time, from days to months, inside the animal cells, providing another source of energy.
