Ana Rita Bezerra (ARB) concluded her PhD in Biology, specialization of Molecular Biology and Genetics in 2013 (Department of Biology, University of Aveiro-UA). She used Candida albicans as a model system to engineer the first artificial genetic code alteration in any organism. This work had major implications to the field of synthetic biology by opening the possibility of engineering microorganisms with novel phenotypic traits, useful for basic and applied research. As a Post-doc, she integrated the Sybaris FP7-HEALTH European project (2013). This consortium led by Dr. Misha Kapushesky (EMBL-EBI) investigated the genetic basis of susceptibility to fungal disease. From 2014 to 2016, she was a Post-doc in the Mistral European project led by Dr. Philippe Pierre (Centre d’Immunologie de Marseille) and Dr. Manuel Santos (UA). Here, she studied the consequences of mistranslation in immunity and stress resistance of Candida. During this period, she also established a strict collaboration with Dr. Csaba Pál (Synthetic and Systems Biology Unit of Szeged) to reassess links between protein synthesis, stress response, genome diversification, and adaptation potential. During both projects ARB established a network of international collaborators whose expertise range from fungal biology, functional genomics, bioinformatics, systems biology, and immunology. In 2017, ARB integrated the newly created iBiMED (Institute of Biomedicine, UA) as a Researcher at the Medical Mycology laboratory. During 2018-2019, she was awarded a 200.000 euros project (FCT-PTDC /IMI-MIC/5350/2014) as Principal Investigator to unravel the role of mistranslation in the acquisition of drug resistance in C. albicans. During 2021-2025, she was awarded a 250.000 euros project (PTDC/BIA-MIC/1141/2021) and an Assistant Researcher contract (2022.07484.CEECIND) to identify new genetic markers of antifungal resistance using an integrative approach, combining population genomics, genome wide association studies (GWAS) and expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) mapping. As of 2025, ARB is an Assistant Researcher and Leader at the Medical Mycology Group. In the last 5 years, she partaken in national and international research projects, conference presentations, jury panels of academic degrees and grant attributions, and helped in the organization of conferences. Her leadership skills are echoed in the supervision of 9 MSc thesis and supervision of 4 PhD thesis. Additionally, she acquired teaching experience in the BSc degree of Biomedical Sciences and MsC degree of Clinical Bioinformatics at UA. She participated in scientific dissemination initiatives to scientific and non-scientific audiences, such as the coordination of the medical microbiology program of the Summer School Initiative of the UA. Ana was a member of iBiMED’s volunteer taskforce for the screening of SARS-CoV-2 for COVID-19 diagnosis. She is a member of the Portuguese Association of Medical Mycology (ASPOMM).
