ACosta has a Biochemistry degree and a PhD in Biomedicine by the Porto University. She has been devoted to study signal transduction mechanisms in Microbiology and Oncobiology. ACosta career began at Complutense University of Madrid, where she developed her BSc thesis on Candida albicans stress signaling pathways. Then she moved to the Oncobiology field at Institute of Pathology and Molecular Immunology of Porto University (IPATIMUP), where she studied the molecular mechanisms associated with cancer progression on thyroid and gastric cancer. There, Acosta developed her PhD (FCT grant awarded), where in collaboration with the Max-Planck Institute for Infection Biology, she studied the Helicobacter pylori role on the regulation of cell adhesion and invasion in gastric cancer. From this, she published 3 articles as 1st author, and had a PhD dissertation unanimously approved with distinction. As a post-Doc ACosta worked on the molecular mechanisms involved in glioma cell invasion, at the Institute of Life and Health Sciences (ICVS-Braga), which resulted in a 1st author original article. In 2015, she joined the Institute for Research & Innovation in Health (i3S) with an FCT-awarded post-doctoral grant to investigate colon cancer microenvironment. Over the last 5 years, ACosta became the Principal Investigator of the Hypoxia and Modulation of Tumor Microenvironment research line at the Tumor and Microenvironment Interactions Group at i3S. In this scope, ACosta supervised 4 MSc students, and was the senior author of an original article, published in a Q1 journal, contributed with 3 oral presentations, and 11 posters in national and international conferences, 2 awarded as Best Poster. In 2020, ACosta was awarded with 1st nCounter Tumor Signaling 360 Panel Grant as Principal Investigator, to study the hypoxia-driven immunomodulation in colon cancer. In 2020 and 2022 she interrupted her scientific activity due to a maternity leave. ACosta was team member of 11 FCT-funded projects and 2 International consortia. ACosta supervised 5 MSc students, and mentored 13 students (6 PhD, 5 MSc, 2 BSc). Her work was recognized by the invitation to be the main arguer in 5 MSc jury committees, member of 2 PhD students monitoring committees, and part of scientific and evaluation committee of several scientific meetings. ACosta was involved in the organization of post-graduate courses, and is a science ambassador to general public/schools science dissemination. She is an EACR and ASPIC member, and reviewer in International Scientific Journals. In November 2024, ACosta had published 23 peer-reviewed articles: 6 as 1st author, and 2 as senior author having a 14 h-index and 1186 citations (Scopus). She is also author of 20 conference proceedings and >50 oral/poster scientific communications in national and international meetings, 18 as senior author, and 3 book chapters.
