Joana Baço is a maritime archaeologist and member of the ERC Synergy Grant 4-OCEANS: Human History of Marine Life, where she is responsible for management & communication and also for the photogrammetry and 3D modelling. Joana combines research with project management and science communication. She contributed to the study of maritime cultural heritage, especially in anchorage areas and artisanal fishing areas, framing underwater sites and archaeological remains within their wide context, being responsible for the digital record (photogrammetry) of archaeological artefacts and more, specializing in submerged anchors, wooden ship parts, whale bones, among others. She’s part of the “Archaeology of Landscapes” research group, at CHAM – Centre for the Humanities, NOVA FCSH. She participates in national and international maritime and underwater archaeology projects and also in research networks, such as Oceans Past Initiative. Her areas of research focus on the past of the oceans, maritime history and archaeology, interactions between humans and non-humans, photogrammetry and the study of primitive vessels.
