Maria de Brito completed her Bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2022 at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), where she developed a strong interest in human health and biomedical research. During this time, she enrolled the Unit for Multidisciplinary Investigation in Biomedicine (UMIB), FCT founded, and conducted a curricular internship at the Laboratory of Cellular Biology, Department of Microscopy, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS-UP), under the supervision of Professor Doctor Mário Sousa, MD, PhD, Full Professor and Dr. Rute Pereira, PhD. Her work focused on the diagnostic criteria and methodologies for Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, a rare genetic disorder affecting ciliary function. This research is currently being developed into a scientific article reflecting its scientific relevance and was presented at the Young Researchers Meeting by University of Porto (IJUP) in both 2022 and 2023. In 2024, she completed her Master’s Degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology at FCUP with a thesis entitled “Bupropion and Male Reproductive Health: Exploring Its Role in Sexual Dysfunction and Fertility”. The project resulted in two first-author scientific articles: a laboratory-based study published in the international journal F&S Science (DOI:10.1016/j.xfss.2025.02.006), and a systematic review currently accepted for publication under minor revisions in Sexual Medicine Reviews. This work, conducted at Laboratory of Cellular Biology, Department of Microscopy, ICBAS-UP, under the supervision of Prof. Doctor Rosália Sá, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor and Professor Doctor Mário Sousa, was also selected for oral and poster presentations at multiple scientific meetings, including IJUP 2024, the 9th Portuguese Congress of Reproductive Medicine (2024) by the Portuguese Society of Reproductive Medicine and the XVIII National Congress & Iberian Meeting of Andrology, Sexual Medicine and Reproduction (2024) by Portuguese Society of Andrology, Sexual Medicine and Reproduction. Throughout her academic training, Maria has developed strong laboratory competencies in microscopy, cell biology, immunohistochemistry, and male reproductive biology. Her expertise includes advanced analysis of sperm function and integrity, particularly in DNA fragmentation and chromatin condensation, oxidative stress, and acrosome reaction. She is also proficient in statistical analysis and scientific writing, with a strong commitment to science communication. Beyond academia, Maria actively contributed to science outreach and student representation. She served as a monitor in the Junior University (2024) and as a collaborator in two editions of the School of Life and Health Sciences (2023 & 2024) by the University of Porto. In parallel, she held elected positions as Vice-President of the Board of the General Assembly of the Students’ Association of FCUP (AEFCUP) for two consecutive terms (2022/2023 & 2023/2024). These experiences reflect her strong communication skills, leadership, and engagement with the scientific and education community and society.
