Vicente Fernández Rodilla is a young marine biologist who works in the area of Marine Biology with emphasis on Marine Mammal Ecology and Behavior. He is currently working with sperm whale expert Dr. Cláudia Oliveira at the Departamento de Oceanografia e Pescas (DOP) in Horta, Faial (Azores, Portugal), analyzing the D-tag gathered data with different programming languages such as Matlab and R. Vicente has been working with cetaceans since 2019, starting with his final bachelor thesis "Breathing behavior of a deep-diving cetacean (Globicephala marcrorhynchus): why do pilot whales hyperventilate?", which was tutored by deep-diving cetaceans expert Dr. Natacha Aguilar de Soto. Later he started "Acción Cachalote", a project on the conservation of sperm whale populations in the Canary Islands, which was granted with 3.000 € by the University of La Laguna’s INGENIA II (Tenerife) in collaboration with the Government of Tenerife. On summer 2021, Vicente worked as a Research Assistant at Sea Turtle Conservancy (Tortuguero, Costa Rica), the longest ongoing sea turtle conservation and monitoring program in the world, tagging nesting sea turtles, collecting biometric and human impact data, tissue and blood samples, as well as inserting metadata in databases. During these 3 months of fieldwork he carried out daily track surveys along the 29.4 km of nesting beach at Tortuguero. On September 2021, Vicente started an intership at DOP, studying sperm whale bheavior in response to vessel noise. After concluding his internship on December, he was hired as an Estagiar Researcher, starting on January 2022. During 2022, Vicente will be working on sperm whale D-tag death reconning, generating real-life 3D graphic representation of the whale's underwater behavior.
