ANA CAROLINA DA SILVA CAETANO

Carolina is a biologist holding a BSc degree in Biology (2017) and a Master's Degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology (2019) from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology at the University of Coimbra. With a solid academic background, Carolina's professional journey has been marked by diverse experiences and contributions to both scientific research and science communication. Throughout her academic journey, Carolina actively engaged in internships and laboratory rotations, exploring diverse fields such as environmental education and conservation of wild life; assisted reproduction and human infertility; behavior studies focusing on maternal separation effects in mice and stem cell culture. Her master's thesis, titled "Investigation of the Blood-Brain Barrier Aging for the Development of an in vitro Model," conducted under the guidance of Dr. Lino Ferreira at the Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), showcased her research prowess. This experience enriched her technical expertise in cell culture techniques involving hematopoietic cells isolated from umbilical cord blood and pluripotent stem cells. Additionally, Carolina gained proficiency in immunofluorescence (confocal microscopy) and gene expression analysis techniques. Following the completion of her master's thesis, Carolina continued her scientific journey as a research assistant at the Advanced Therapies group (grant reference: ERA@UC L644631) for a year and a half, focusing on investigating the role of aging and senescence on the blood-brain barrier. In 2021, Carolina embarked on her journey in science communication by joining the science communication office of the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology at the University of Coimbra (CNC-UC), under the coordination of Dr. Sara Amaral. In this capacity, Carolina excelled in managing CNC-UC's social media platforms, crafting compelling press releases, and coordinating engaging public engagement activities. She also played an active role in various science communication projects, contributing to the production of multimedia content, including short videos and digital campaigns. Carolina currently holds the position of Science Communication Manager at the Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People & the Planet for the PolinizAÇÃO project. Utilizing her expertise in both biology and communication, she acts as a vital link between scientific research/topics and public comprehension. Her efforts focus on raising awareness and enhancing engagement in the realms of pollination and conservation.
