Fátima Milhano Santos is a young Portuguese researcher specializing in clinical proteomics, with extensive expertise in the study of molecular mechanisms in several diseases, as well as in the search for new disease biomarkers in biological fluids such as serum and vitreous humor. She earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2020, focusing on the Human Vitreous Proteome in Vitreoretinal Diseases. Funded by an FCT fellowship, her doctoral research employed proteomics to identify key biomarkers and mechanisms underlying vitreoretinal diseases, shedding light on the roles of inflammation, complement and coagulation cascades, oxidative stress, and neurodegeneration in disease progression. Currently, she is a postdoctoral researcher at the Cellular and Molecular Biology in Renal and Vascular Pathology Laboratory at IIS-Fundación Jiménez Díaz, Spain, under a Sara Borrell contract (CD23/00049). Her research focuses on identifying therapeutic targets and biomarkers for renal diseases and cardiovascular complications, investigating particularly the role of extracellular vesicle-derived biomarkers linked to secondary senescence and disease progression. From 2020 to 2023, she consolidated her expertise in the proteomics field at the Functional Proteomics Laboratory (CNB-CSIC, Madrid). There, she worked with high-throughput mass spectrometers (Orbitrap Exploris 240 and Orbitrap Eclipse Tribrid) and contributed to the development of automated sample preparation protocols using the Opentrons Robot and AccelerOme platform (beta-tester). Her research in this period has centered on proteomics analysis of biological fluids (serum and saliva) and cellular models in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic to find new biomarkers, aligned with multidisciplinary initiatives such as PTI "Global Health" Platform (CSIC). In the last years, she has actively participated in several funded research projects in Portugal and Spain, leading to the publication of 28 scientific papers, including two as a corresponding author, an invited book chapter, and four conference papers. Her work has been cited 381 times (h-index: 13) according to Google Scholar and 237 times (h-index: 9) according to SCOPUS. Additionally, she has presented at around 60 national and international conferences, delivering multiple oral and poster communications. She regularly does peer reviews for several editors (25 verified peer reviews according to Publons). In UBI, she has also co-supervised three MSc dissertations.
